THE REGION

Alyeska brings together the Chugach Mountains, the waters of Turnagain Arm and the small community of Girdwood. The contrast is the attraction: substantial ski terrain above a coastal valley, with cabins, local restaurants and Hotel Alyeska below. It feels quite different from a large purpose-built ski village.

The Seward Highway approach follows Turnagain Arm. Allow time for the journey and use designated stopping places if you want to enjoy the scenery or watch for wildlife. Girdwood's original town was badly affected by the 1964 earthquake and rebuilt on higher ground; the community still has a mix of working Alaska, outdoor culture and resort visitors.

Alyeska's coastal storms can deliver substantial snowfall, but conditions vary across the mountain and through the winter. Choose terrain for the day and your ability, using the resort's current openings rather than treating the snowfall average as a promise of powder. The combination of mountain scenery and a distinctive town makes time off the slopes part of the trip.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Girdwood operates on its own schedule. This is a town where ski bums and CEOs share chairlifts, where the bartender might have summited Denali last summer, and where "overdressed" means anything fancier than Gore-Tex. The community of roughly 2,000 souls has cultivated a fierce independence while welcoming visitors with genuine warmth.

Girdwood’s dining has distinct personalities. Chair 5 brings longstanding pizza-and-bar character to the town square. Sitzmark on Olympic Mountain Loop is a casual après and events venue, while Jack Sprat offers seasonal world cuisine that welcomes different dietary preferences.

The arts community punches above its weight. Girdwood Center for Visual Arts showcases local talent, and the Forest Fair in summer draws artists and craftspeople from across the state. Even in winter, you'll find gallery openings, live music, and community events that reveal a creative spirit beneath the ski-bum surface.

Wild Alaska is never far away. Moose wander through town regularly—locals know not to approach, especially cows with calves. Bears hibernate in winter but emerge in spring, and the mountains surrounding the valley hold wolves, lynx, and mountain goats. This isn't a zoo; it's their home, and humans are the visitors.

The community has a storied history of characters: gold miners, railroad workers, adventurers, and dreamers who found this valley and couldn't leave. That spirit persists in the eclectic buildings, the independent businesses, and the unstated agreement that Girdwood's magic lies partly in what it isn't—a cookie-cutter resort town.

GETTING THERE

Anchorage International Airport is the main gateway. Drive south on the Seward Highway towards Girdwood, then take the Alyeska Highway into the valley. Treat the airport transfer as a mountain journey: allow extra time for winter road conditions and consult Alaska 511 before departure.

Choose the correct arrival point for your booking. Hotel Alyeska and the Daylodge base are separate destinations, so use the resort's directions for your lodging, lesson or equipment pickup. A rental car gives flexibility around the valley; booked transfers and local transport offer alternatives. Arrange the airport journey and check the local route and timetable before relying on a car-free stay.

WHEN TO GO

Midwinter offers short days and a snow-focused trip; late winter and spring bring more daylight for mountain time. Alyeska's coastal setting means conditions can range from fresh snow to warmer, wetter weather, so pack layers and choose terrain around the day's report.

Night skiing is part of the winter offering on selected evenings. Use the resort's current schedule for operating days and terrain, and plan a flexible rest-day option for your stay. The historical season range is a planning guide, not a guarantee that every lift or slope will be open.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🏔️

Portage Glacier

Outdoor

Consider the Portage Valley for scenery on a non-ski day. Check seasonal road, visitor-facility and tour access before setting out.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

Family

Refuge for injured and orphaned animals including bears, moose, and musk oxen

🎭

Crow Creek Mine

Culture

A historic gold-mining outing to consider in the warmer season; consult its current tour and opening information.

🏔️

Dog Sledding

Outdoor

A booked mushing experience can add a different Alaska perspective; compare the operator’s seasonal location and trip arrangements.

🏔️

Turnagain Arm Wildlife Viewing

Outdoor

Look for wildlife from designated viewing places along the highway; sightings are a possibility, not a scheduled attraction.

🏔️

Nordic Skiing

Outdoor

Explore Girdwood’s Nordic trail options using local grooming and trail reports; choose a route suited to the day and your experience.

WHERE TO STAY

Hotel Alyeska offers ski-in/ski-out rooms and suites with dining and a hotel saltwater pool. Black Diamond Club is a category within the hotel, adding its lounge, breakfast and afternoon refreshments. Arrange Nordic Spa access explicitly and check what your selected package includes.

For a Girdwood town base, Carriage House’s cottages provide kitchens near California Creek, while Alyeska Hostel offers bunks, private rooms and separate cabin or studio options with different kitchen and bathroom arrangements. Choose the format that fits your group and plan the journey to the ski area. If combining skiing with time in Anchorage, account for winter road conditions and the daily journey when comparing bases.

THE FOOD SCENE

Seven Glaciers makes a special occasion of dinner, with an aerial-tram journey from Hotel Alyeska, glacier and ocean views, and Alaskan ingredients. Bore Tide Deli & Bar at the upper tram terminal offers a more casual mountain meal.

Back in Girdwood, Jack Sprat’s seasonal world cuisine suits mixed tastes, including vegans and meat eaters. Chair 5 in the town square is the longstanding pizza-and-bar choice, with food made to order.

Dining follows seasonal operating patterns. Reserve special dinners and check the operator’s dates, kitchen hours and tram arrangements before heading out.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Sitzmark on Olympic Mountain Loop is the casual ski-day gathering place for drinks, conversation and concerts or events. Chair 5 brings a relaxed restaurant-and-bar alternative in Girdwood’s town square.

For an evening centered on food, choose Jack Sprat’s seasonal world cuisine or plan ahead for Seven Glaciers above Hotel Alyeska. A quiet meal fits Girdwood just as well as a busy bar; let the day’s energy set the pace.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Choose between Hotel Alyeska, the Daylodge base and a Girdwood stay around the places you will use each day.
  • 💡Use the current mountain report to plan expert terrain; a famous line is not a promise that it is open.
  • 💡Leave room in the itinerary for the Seward Highway journey and a flexible non-ski day.
  • 💡For a car-free stay, arrange airport transport and check local connections before booking.
  • 💡Balance mountain dining with Girdwood restaurants for a broader sense of the place.
