Ski school isn't just for learning—it gives kids their own experience while parents ski freely.

Book Early

Popular holiday weeks sell out months in advance. Book ski school before flights.

Multi-Day Discounts

3-5 day packages often save 20%+ over daily rates and improve retention.

Private vs Group

Groups are social and fun; privates are better for anxious kids or fast progression.

Age Requirements

Most schools start at age 3-4. Call ahead to confirm bathroom independence requirements.

Epic Ski School Programs

Vail, Beaver Creek, and Park City have some of the highest-rated ski school programs in North America, with dedicated children's learning areas.

Parent Tip:

Don't hover during lessons. Kids perform better without parents watching. Use the time to ski challenging terrain you couldn't do together.

5. Planning a Family Ski Trip

The key to a successful family ski trip is managing expectations and building in flexibility.

Timing

Avoid Christmas week and Presidents' Week if possible—prices are double and lift lines triple. Early January or late March offer great conditions with fewer crowds.

Trip Length

4-5 days is ideal for families. Day 1 for travel and settling, 3 ski days, Day 5 for a rest/activity day or travel home. Kids need recovery time. See our Itinerary Planning guide for detailed frameworks.

Lodging Location

Ski-in/ski-out is worth the premium with kids. No morning car shuffle, easy lunch breaks, and quick escapes when someone melts down.

Non-Ski Activities

Plan at least one non-ski activity: tubing, swimming pool, ice skating, or a town exploration day. Variety prevents burnout.

6. Gear & Equipment Advice

The Rent vs Buy Decision:

Rent If:

  • • Kids are still growing fast
  • • You ski less than 7 days/year
  • • You're flying (no baggage fees)

Buy If:

  • • Kids ski 10+ days/year
  • • You drive to resorts
  • • You can find seasonal swaps

Essential Kids Gear:

  • •Helmet: Non-negotiable. Rent or buy, but always wear one.
  • •Goggles: Bring two pairs—kids lose them constantly.
  • •Hand/Toe Warmers: Cold kids are unhappy kids. Stock up.
  • •Snacks: High-calorie pocket snacks prevent hangry meltdowns.

7. Making Memories (Not Meltdowns)

The goal is creating lifelong skiers who love the mountain. That means prioritizing fun over performance.

Stop Before They're Tired

Quit while they still want more. A 3-hour day where everyone's happy beats a 6-hour day with tears.

Hot Chocolate Breaks Are Mandatory

Lodge breaks aren't wasted time—they're memory-making time. Budget time and money for treats.

Let Them Lead Sometimes

Once they can ski safely, let them pick the runs. Ownership creates enthusiasm.

Celebrate Small Wins

First chairlift, first blue run, first time without pizza—every milestone matters.

Photos & Videos

Document the day. Kids love seeing themselves ski, and you'll treasure these memories.
