THE REGION

This central Swiss mountain region pairs Andermatt in Uri with Sedrun and Disentis in Graubünden. Andermatt combines older village buildings with modern hotels, while the wider region offers a choice of places to base a trip.

The skiing is broader than its freeride reputation suggests. Gemsstock brings challenging terrain, and the other mountain areas add cruising and family options. Think of it as a regional trip with different starting points, rather than one uninterrupted circuit.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Andermatt sits at the crossroads of four alpine passes — Gotthard, Oberalp, Furka, and Susten — giving it a unique strategic and cultural history. The village was a military garrison for centuries. Today, the contrast between the traditional timber chalets and Sawiris's sleek new developments (The Chedi, Radisson Blu) creates a fascinating juxtaposition. Sedrun is Romansh-speaking, adding another cultural layer. Disentis is home to an 8th-century Benedictine monastery.

GETTING THERE

For Andermatt, rail connections run through Göschenen on the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway. Andermatt station gives access to the Gütsch-Express; local winter buses help with other village connections. For Disentis, another rail approach runs through Chur and the Rhine Gorge. The railway also links Andermatt, Sedrun and Disentis over the Oberalp Pass.

By road, choose the approach for your actual village and check seasonal pass openings. Alpine passes that offer summer routes are not dependable winter shortcuts. Use the current SBB timetable and local transport information to plan arrival and daily journeys.

WHEN TO GO

Plan winter dates around the particular mountain areas you want to ski. Gemsstock, Andermatt–Sedrun and Disentis have separate operating calendars, and open terrain depends on conditions. Spring generally offers more daylight. Match freeride plans to current avalanche information and qualified local guidance.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🏔️

Gemsstock Freeride

Outdoor

A challenging mountain choice for experienced skiers. Plan freeride outings with qualified local guidance and current conditions.

🧘

🧘

🎭

Glacier Express Route

Culture

Consider a rail outing through the region; compare ordinary scheduled trains with the named Glacier Express service and its booking requirements.

🏔️

Cross-Country Skiing

Outdoor

Well-groomed Loipen trails in the Urseren Valley floor offer classic and skating technique tracks with mountain views

WHERE TO STAY

Choose the village around the ski sector and accommodation style you want. In Andermatt, The Chedi combines a village and rail base with extensive spa facilities; Radisson Blu Reussen offers rooms, suites and flats near the lifts, while Hotel Sonne provides traditional rooms and Swiss dining.

For a Disentis base, independently let Disentiserhof Apartment A208 provides two bedrooms and a kitchen; its offering is separate from the former hotel services. Sedrun is another base to compare when planning the trip. Check the lift, bus and rail connections for the sectors you intend to ski, as well as the facilities of your exact accommodation.

THE FOOD SCENE

Andermatt has three distinct dinner styles: The Japanese inside The Chedi for a refined Japanese-inspired tasting menu, Gasthaus Ochsen for a rustic fondue meal, and Pinte for informal pub food and drinks. The Japanese at Gütsch is a separate mountain restaurant, so check the venue when reserving.

For The Japanese in the hotel, plan an evening meal and change out of ski clothing; it welcomes children aged six and over. If you are staying in Sedrun or Disentis, choose an evening plan around that village rather than assuming every dinner is in Andermatt.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Pinte on Gotthardstrasse is the casual village pub-and-club option, with drinks, food, music and pub games. The Chedi’s The Bar & Living Room offers a more polished setting with fireplaces, sofas, cocktails and light bites. Check the individual venue’s program when planning a music-led evening.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Choose your village and first lift together when booking accommodation.
  • 💡Build train, gondola and local-bus connections into days exploring different mountain areas.
  • 💡Compare Bogn Sedrun’s pool and wellness options for time away from the slopes.
