THE REGION

Arapahoe Basin sits high in Colorado’s Summit County, with open alpine terrain and expansive mountain views. Pallavicini and the East Wall are established draws for experienced skiers, while Montezuma Bowl adds another side of the mountain to explore. Choose terrain for your ability and the day’s openings.

The compact base keeps the trip focused on skiing, but meals can range from the sociable 6th Alley to the summit bistro Il Rifugio. The Beach is a distinctive gathering place for tailgates, with spaces reserved through the resort.

Staying in Keystone, Dillon, Silverthorne or Frisco brings town restaurants, shops and a choice of lodging styles into the trip. This works well for visitors who want a mountain day followed by an evening in a real town, and who are comfortable arranging the journey between them.

THE LOCAL SCENE

A-Basin’s character is tied to time on the mountain and the people who return to it. The 6th Alley gives visitors a natural place to meet locals and staff over food, while Il Rifugio makes a long lunch feel like part of the alpine experience. The food scene has more range than the compact base might suggest.

The Beach tailgate tradition adds an outdoor gathering place, with access arrangements to check before the trip. For the rest of the day, the Summit County towns supply useful contrasts: a local breakfast in Silverthorne, a casual brewpub meal in Dillon or a reserved dinner in Keystone. That mix suits visitors who want the ski day to remain the centre of the trip.

GETTING THERE

Denver International is the main flight gateway. A-Basin is on US-6 east of Keystone. From Denver, Loveland Pass is one approach; when the pass is closed, use I-70 through the Eisenhower Tunnel and approach via Keystone. Winter weather and I-70 traffic can materially lengthen the journey.

Summit Stage’s Swan Mountain Flyer serves A-Basin during peak ski season. Check connections from your lodging and the last return bus.

Weekday parking is generally free; winter weekends have reservation requirements. Use the operator’s parking calendar for your dates. Beach tailgate spaces need their own advance reservation. No overnight parking or camping is allowed in A-Basin’s lots; arrange a designated overnight stay elsewhere.

WHEN TO GO

A-Basin’s long-season reputation makes it a destination to consider for both midwinter and spring. Opening, closing and available terrain depend on conditions, so use the operator’s calendar and mountain report when choosing travel dates.

Midwinter suits a snow-focused trip with warm layers for exposed alpine terrain. Spring brings longer days and a different social atmosphere, with changing snow through the day. Plan your terrain choices around conditions rather than assuming a particular slope will ski well at a fixed hour.

For an extended Summit County trip, leave flexibility for another mountain or a day in town. That gives the holiday variety without relying on every area of A-Basin being available throughout the stay.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🏔️

Loveland Pass

Outdoor

A scenic mountain-pass route when open; check road conditions before making it part of a drive.

🎭

Historic Summit County towns

Culture

Explore Frisco’s Main Street or Breckenridge for shops, meals and a change of pace from the mountain.

🏔️

Keystone Resort

Outdoor

A neighboring ski-day option with village facilities; use Keystone’s own tickets, openings and activity information.

🏔️

Summit County Nordic Centers

Outdoor

Consider a day on a maintained Nordic trail system; choose an open center and a route suited to your group.

🏔️

Lake Dillon

Outdoor

A mountain reservoir setting for a scenic outing; choose activities offered for the season.

🏔️

Continental Divide Views

Outdoor

Enjoy the surrounding peaks from open mountain areas and appropriate roadside viewpoints.

WHERE TO STAY

Compare Summit County town bases and plan the mountain connection separately. Keystone Lodge & Spa offers a lakeside hotel with spa, pool and dining; its hotel shuttle serves Keystone stops, so the onward A-Basin journey needs its own plan.

Silverthorne offers town services and a choice of stay styles. Hampton Inn & Suites provides breakfast, an indoor pool and connecting-room options. The Block Hotel & Commons has private and shared lodging, communal spaces, a kitchen and gear storage; several room categories use shared bathrooms.

Frisco combines Main Street dining and shops with accommodation choices. Snowshoe Motel offers simple rooms plus selected kitchen-equipped layouts by a public bus stop. AC Hotel Frisco is near the Summit Stage Transit Station and has a pool, whirlpool, restaurant and bar.

Summit Stage provides an A-Basin option during peak ski season. Check the route, any transfers and the final return before planning a stay around public transport. A hotel shuttle or nearby bus stop does not itself establish a direct A-Basin connection.

THE FOOD SCENE

A-Basin has several different kinds of ski-day meal. The Legends Cafe at the base covers a quick breakfast or lunch, while Black Mountain Lodge pairs barbecue with a mid-mountain deck looking toward the East Wall. Il Rifugio at Snow Plume adds a European-style bistro option, with wine, charcuterie and a summit setting worth making time for. The 6th Alley is the base-area choice for pub food and a sociable deck.

Down in Summit County, Sunshine Cafe in Silverthorne offers a local diner breakfast or lunch; Dillon Dam Brewery suits a casual meal with a mixed group. For a reserved evening out, Ski Tip Lodge in East Keystone serves seasonal prix-fixe dinners in an intimate historic building. These town options require a separate trip from A-Basin. Check seasonal service and book the special dinner ahead.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

The 6th Alley Bar & Grill is the straightforward place to end a ski day at A-Basin, with a lively bar, mountain views and a two-story deck. Its local-band programming adds to the atmosphere when scheduled. The Beach tailgate tradition is another part of the mountain’s social life; use the current Beach and parking guidance when planning to join it.

For a meal after leaving the mountain, Dillon Dam Brewery offers American pub fare and house beer in a family-friendly setting. A reserved dinner at Ski Tip Lodge makes a quieter evening out. Choose the meal and return transport together.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Reserve parking and Beach spaces through the appropriate operator booking pages for your dates.
  • 💡Choose Pallavicini, the East Wall and other expert terrain only when open and suitable for your ability and the conditions.
  • 💡Give Montezuma Bowl time in your day when its terrain is open.
  • 💡For a Beach gathering, use propane or gas grills, keep dogs leashed and follow the resort’s posted rules.
  • 💡Compare a sociable base-area meal with Il Rifugio’s summit-bistro setting.
  • 💡For a spring trip, check current mountain openings before committing to travel.
