MOUNT WASHINGTON VALLEY

THE REGION

The Mount Washington Valley stretches across the eastern slopes of New Hampshire's White Mountains, anchored by the towering presence of Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeastern United States at 6,288 feet. The valley encompasses a string of charming towns including Bartlett, Glen, Jackson, and North Conway, all connected by scenic Route 302 and Route 16. This region has been a premier outdoor recreation destination for over a century, drawing visitors with its dramatic mountain scenery, covered bridges, and a four-season playground that ranges from world-class skiing to summer hiking on the Appalachian Trail. The White Mountain National Forest provides a stunning backdrop of dense hardwood and conifer forests, rocky granite summits, and cascading waterfalls that freeze into spectacular ice formations each winter.

THE LOCAL SCENE

The Mount Washington Valley blends rugged New England mountain culture with a welcoming tourist-town charm. North Conway is the commercial hub, famous for its tax-free outlet shopping along Route 16 and a vibrant dining scene ranging from classic New England seafood to craft breweries. The region has a strong climbing and mountaineering heritage, and conversations at local pubs often turn to tales of summit attempts on Mount Washington or backcountry skiing in Tuckerman Ravine.

GETTING THERE

The nearest commercial airport is Portland International Jetport (PWM) in Maine, about 90 minutes southeast. Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT) is roughly two hours south, and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) is about 2.5 hours away. Most visitors drive, taking I-93 North to Route 302 East through Crawford Notch, or I-95 to Route 16 North through North Conway. Winter driving conditions can be challenging through the mountain passes, so all-wheel drive and snow tires are highly recommended.

WHEN TO GO

Peak ski season runs from late December through mid-March, with January and February offering the most consistent snowfall and coldest temperatures. Early March brings longer days and spring-like conditions. Midweek visits offer significantly shorter lift lines and better lodge access. The holiday periods between Christmas and New Year's and Presidents' Day week are the busiest and most expensive times to visit.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

Story Land and Living Shores Aquarium

Family

Story Land is a seasonal family theme park in Glen. For a winter outing, consider the neighbouring indoor Living Shores Aquarium, which advertises year-round opening; check the calendar for your visit.

WHERE TO STAY

The valley offers a wide range of accommodations. North Conway is packed with motels, inns, and vacation rentals along Route 16, from budget-friendly options like the Eastern Slope Inn to upscale properties such as the White Mountain Hotel. In Bartlett itself, the Attitash Grand Summit Hotel sits slopeside and provides ski-in/ski-out convenience. Jackson Village, about 15 minutes away, is home to several classic New England country inns with a quieter, more romantic atmosphere.

THE FOOD SCENE

The valley makes it easy to choose between a ski-bar evening and a relaxed brewery meal. Red Parka Steakhouse & Pub in Glen brings steakhouse and pub food with live-music energy. Tuckerman Brewing in Conway pairs its indoor tasting room with pizza. For another sit-down option, Tuckermans Restaurant in Intervale serves American bistro and chophouse food; it is a separate business from the brewery. North Conway adds more choice: Delaney’s Hole in the Wall is a local pick for burgers and comfort food, while Moat Mountain Smoke House and Brewing Company pairs smoked meats with its own craft beers.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Red Parka in Glen is the pick for a lively ski-town pub atmosphere. Tuckerman Brewing in Conway offers a more casual tasting-room stop with food and live music; its outdoor beer garden is seasonal. Check the venues’ own event listings when music is part of the plan.

INSIDER TIPS

  • πŸ’‘Compare a day at nearby Wildcat with Attitash for a different mountain character; check that your particular Epic product covers both.
  • πŸ’‘Try Bear Peak for wide-open cruising, choosing runs from the current trail map to suit your group.
  • πŸ’‘Grab breakfast at Stairway Cafe in North Conway before heading to the mountain -- it's a local favorite with huge portions.
  • πŸ’‘Match the day to current snow and grooming; do not assume tree terrain will provide a safe alternative when groomed trails are icy.
