THE REGION

Big Bear Valley is a Southern California mountain escape with a lake, pine forests and a walkable village. Big Bear Mountain Resort operates Bear Mountain, Snow Summit and Snow Valley; Snow Valley is farther west and has its own base and approach. The combination suits park riders, learners and visitors pairing ski days with a village or cabin stay.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Big Bear has a distinctly Southern California personality - friendly, casual, and diverse. The resort attracts everyone from serious park skiers filming video parts to families introducing kids to their first snow experience. There's no pretense here; people are just happy to be in the mountains.

The freestyle culture runs deep, particularly at Bear Mountain, which has cultivated a reputation as one of California's best terrain park destinations. The park scene here launched careers and continues to attract progression-focused riders from across the Southland.

Big Bear Village has matured into a pleasant downtown district with boutiques, restaurants, and a year-round community. While it lacks the authentic mining-town character of some mountain villages, it offers genuine hospitality and amenities that make extended stays comfortable.

GETTING THERE

Compare Ontario and Los Angeles airports with the onward mountain-road journey. Traffic and winter weather can add substantially to travel time, so check Caltrans road conditions and chain requirements before leaving. Choose your route for the actual mountain and current road conditions rather than relying on a fixed shortcut.

Bear Mountain and Snow Summit have separate bases in the Big Bear Lake area; Snow Valley is farther west. Match your ticket, lesson and rental pickup to the mountain you plan to visit, and check current inter-area transport arrangements if you want to change areas.

WHEN TO GO

Plan a winter ski trip around snow conditions and each mountain’s opening schedule. Snowmaking supports the season but does not guarantee coverage on your dates. Weekdays generally offer a calmer experience than weekends and holidays. Night Sessions are offered on selected dates at Snow Summit and Snow Valley, with their own schedules and ticket arrangements.

WHERE TO STAY

Stay near Big Bear Village for restaurants and evening walks, or compare Snow Summit Townhouses for a base beside Snow Summit. Big Bear Frontier offers a cabin option, while Cool Cabins manages individual rentals around the valley. Choose the specific property for its location, kitchen, pet arrangements and journey to your chosen mountain; a Big Bear Lake stay is a different approach from lodging near Snow Valley.

THE FOOD SCENE

Compare Teddy Bear Restaurant for home-style meals and pies with Peppercorn Grille for a California-cuisine lunch or dinner. Tropicali brings poke and a tropical atmosphere to town. For a ski-day meal at Bear Mountain, BBQ in the Park offers a seasonal sun-deck grill; use the operator’s dining page for the day’s open venues.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Murray’s Saloon & Eatery is in Big Bear Village, so plan it as a town stop after skiing. The village has other restaurant and bar choices for a relaxed evening, while your mountain’s base-area venues suit a break before the journey back.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Choose Bear Mountain, Snow Summit or Snow Valley before reserving lessons and rental pickup.
  • 💡For evening skiing, use the operator’s Night Sessions calendar for the mountain and date.
  • 💡Check Caltrans conditions and chain requirements for the actual road approach before leaving.
