POCONO MOUNTAINS & LEHIGH VALLEY

Blue Mountain rises on the edge of the Pocono Mountains, where the Appalachian ridge system creates the dramatic escarpment that gives the resort its ...

THE REGION

Blue Mountain rises on the edge of the Pocono Mountains, where the Appalachian ridge system creates the dramatic escarpment that gives the resort its impressive vertical. This isn't the deep Poconos of honeymoon resorts and heart-shaped tubs—it's the working end of the region, where Pennsylvania's industrial heritage meets its outdoor recreation future.

The Blue Mountain ridge itself is part of the Kittatinny Ridge, a major migration corridor for raptors and a defining geological feature of eastern Pennsylvania. The ridge catches weather systems moving from the west, often receiving more snow than the valleys below. The resort exploits this geography, spreading 175 skiable acres along the ridge's face.

Palmerton, the small town at the base, carries the scars of its industrial past. A zinc smelting operation defoliated the mountainside for decades, creating an environmental disaster that has since been remediated. The mountain's recovery—now covered in forest and ski trails—stands as a testament to environmental restoration. The Superfund cleanup completed, the area has reinvented itself as a recreation destination.

The Lehigh Valley spreads below, a metropolitan region of roughly 800,000 people who consider Blue Mountain their home hill. Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton form the urban core, old steel and cement towns that have evolved into a mixed economy of healthcare, education, and manufacturing. This population base supports Blue Mountain's robust operations, filling the slopes on weekends and driving significant investment in snowmaking and facilities.

Unlike destination resorts that cater to vacation visitors, Blue Mountain serves a local population learning to ski, raising families on the slopes, and building lifelong connections to the sport. This function—developing skiers—might be its most important contribution to Eastern skiing culture.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Blue Mountain exists for Mid-Atlantic families who want to ski without the commitment of a mountain vacation. This is where kids from Philly and Allentown learn to make turns, where parents steal Thursday evening sessions after work, and where the next generation of Eastern skiers develops their skills.

The vibe is unpretentious and practical. Don't expect the scene you'd find at Vermont resorts—no craft cocktails or designer base villages. Instead, you'll find straightforward food, affordable prices, and a focus on getting people on the snow. The terrain parks have elevated in recent years, drawing a younger crowd of riders progressing through rails and jumps.

Racing programs and ski clubs populate the training sessions, especially on the steeper faces where gates get set regularly. The racing culture runs deep in Pennsylvania skiing, and Blue Mountain serves as a home mountain for competitive programs throughout the region.

The Lehigh Valley's craft brewery scene has grown substantially, though most of it sits in Bethlehem and Allentown rather than at the mountain. Post-ski excursions to breweries like Saucony Creek, Weyerbacher, or the SteelStacks campus in Bethlehem extend the day trip into evening entertainment.

Bethlehem itself merits exploration, particularly the historic SteelStacks complex where the old Bethlehem Steel works have been transformed into an arts and entertainment venue. The Christmas City celebrates the holidays with a famous market and lights display, making ski trips between Thanksgiving and New Year particularly festive.

GETTING THERE

Blue Mountain has distinct Summit and Valley lodges, so choose the arrival point for your activity. The operator directs lessons to Valley Lodge, while skiing and rentals use both lodge areas; Slopeside Pub & Grill is at the Summit. Follow the resort’s directions link for the correct entrance.

Lehigh Valley International is the nearby regional airport; Philadelphia and Newark offer broader flight choices with a longer onward drive. Free parking is available at both lodge locations, alongside selected paid premium spaces. Allow extra time for winter roads and busy weekends.

WHEN TO GO

January and February are the core winter months, with snowmaking supporting conditions when temperatures allow. Early and late season depend more heavily on weather and open terrain. Weekdays generally offer a calmer day than weekends and holidays. Night tickets run on selected operating dates; use the resort’s calendar for closing time rather than assuming the same schedule every evening.

WHERE TO STAY

For a winter stay, choose an off-mountain base and plan to drive to Blue Mountain. The Lodge at Woodstone Country Club in Danielsville offers a country-club setting, on-site dining and selected Jacuzzi suites. Ask the property about the room layout and dinner arrangements that suit your group.

Lehighton provides two practical hotel choices for combining skiing with the Jim Thorpe area. Hampton Inn Lehighton-Jim Thorpe includes breakfast and parking, with an indoor pool and whirlpool. Country Inn & Suites has breakfast, a heated indoor pool and hot tub; its listed two-queen rooms include a microwave and refrigerator. Check the selected room details and allow extra driving time in winter conditions.

Blue Mountain’s camping and glamping sites are options for warm-season outdoor trips, not winter ski accommodation. Keep those plans separate from a ski-weekend hotel booking.

THE FOOD SCENE

For an easy meal at the resort, Slopeside Pub & Grill offers sandwiches, seasonal salads and entrées with mountain views. Last Run Lounge is inside Summit Lodge, making it a convenient place for food and drinks after skiing. Both belong to the resort facilities rather than downtown Palmerton.

Palmerton adds useful choices once you leave the mountain: Joey B’s is a full-service neighborhood bar and restaurant on Delaware Avenue, while Papa Al’s offers pizza, pasta and other Italian dishes. These town stops suit an unhurried dinner after the ski day. Match the meal to your route home and check the venue’s service before setting out.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Blue Mountain’s après choices make it easy to stay at the resort for a while after skiing. Slopeside Pub & Grill combines a meal with mountain views and a regular live-music program. Last Run Lounge offers food, drinks and winter weekend music inside Summit Lodge.

For a night-ski visit, plan your food break around the selected date’s lift and restaurant schedules rather than a fixed closing time. If you prefer a town stop afterwards, Joey B’s in Palmerton offers an informal bar-and-restaurant setting.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Choose Summit or Valley Lodge before setting your navigation, especially for lessons and rental pickup.
  • 💡Book your ski day or night session for the actual date and check the operating report before leaving.
  • 💡Compare free parking with the optional paid premium spaces.
  • 💡Jim Thorpe and the Lehigh Valley add town dining and sightseeing to a stay; plan the extra drive.
