NORTHERN MICHIGAN / BOYNE FALLS AREA

THE REGION

Boyne Mountain brings a full resort village to the rolling hills of northern Michigan, with skiing, terrain parks, an indoor waterpark, spa and other year-round activities. Boyne Falls is the immediate base, with Boyne City and Petoskey offering a broader range of town restaurants and stays. Snowmaking supplements natural lake-effect snowfall; open terrain depends on conditions.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Boyne Mountain culture centers on multi-generational family skiing. Many Midwest families have been coming here for decades, creating strong traditions and repeat visitor communities. The waterpark draws as many families as the slopes, creating a vacation atmosphere rather than a pure skiing destination.

The vibe is middle-America family vacation—friendly, unpretentious, and focused on creating memories together. Après-ski means family dinners and early bedtimes, not late-night parties.

GETTING THERE

Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City is the main commercial gateway; arrange a rental car or transfer for the onward trip to Boyne Falls. Allow extra time for northern Michigan winter conditions. The resort provides free parking and a complimentary shuttle for lodging guests between on-property destinations. That shuttle should not be assumed to include airport transfers.

WHEN TO GO

January and February deliver the most reliable conditions—cold temperatures preserve snow quality, and lake-effect systems add regular refreshers. The terrain parks are typically fully built out by mid-January.

Christmas week and Presidents' Day weekend bring the largest crowds; visit midweek for significantly shorter lift lines. March offers spring skiing conditions at lower prices, though terrain park features may begin deteriorating.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Avalanche Bay Indoor Waterpark

Family

88,000 square feet of slides, wave pool, and family water features open year-round

🧘

🏔️

Zipline Adventure Tour

Outdoor

Multi-line zipline course through the forest canopy, operating in winter

🏔️

Snowshoeing Trails

Outdoor

Miles of marked trails through surrounding forest for non-skiing days

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Tubing Park

Family

Groomed tubing lanes with magic carpet lift for non-skiers and family fun

WHERE TO STAY

Boyne Mountain’s on-site choices suit different trips. Mountain Grand Lodge and Spa offers rooms and larger suites, with indoor resort activities close at hand. Clock Tower Lodge provides a central ski-in/ski-out base. Chalet Edelweiss offers a more secluded slopeside setting; in winter its arrival shuttle carries guests and luggage from Clock Tower because there is no paved walkway to the chalet.

For self-catering groups, Village at Disciples Ridge offers two-bedroom condos with lofts and full kitchens. Select the access category carefully: some are ski-in/ski-out, while others require a short walk to the slopes. Confirm the particular unit and which pool, waterpark or other resort benefits your booking includes.

Petoskey provides an off-resort option. Baymont by Wyndham Petoskey includes breakfast and parking and welcomes dogs; its advertised shuttle serves Odawa Casino, so arrange your own trip to Boyne Mountain. Allow for winter road conditions when choosing a town base.

THE FOOD SCENE

Boyne Mountain gives families several useful ways to eat without leaving the resort. Mountain Express Deli & Provisions is at the lift base for sandwiches, pizza and quick supplies, while the Food Court offers a range of fast meal stations. Forty Acres Tavern is the slopeside choice for a sit-down pub meal, craft beer or cocktails.

Everett’s, inside Mountain Grand Lodge and Spa, covers breakfast through dinner with a broad menu that works well for mixed-age groups. For a town outing, Red Mesa Grill in Boyne City adds Latin-inspired cooking and a tequila bar; you do not have to travel as far as Petoskey for a different dinner setting.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Forty Acres Tavern is an easy place to extend a ski day over a meal and drinks, with a slopeside setting and kids’ choices as well as craft beer and cocktails. Everett’s offers another sit-down option inside Mountain Grand Lodge, while the deli suits a quicker stop.

For an evening away from the resort, Red Mesa Grill in Boyne City offers Latin-inspired food and a lively tequila-bar setting. Choose the venue around your group’s appetite and plans, and check current service when arranging the evening.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Compare lodging packages around the activities your group will actually use, including separate waterpark admission where applicable.
  • 💡The terrain parks add interest for riders; check the current mountain report for open features.
  • 💡Staying on property can simplify a family trip, with the guest shuttle connecting resort destinations.
