THE REGION

Brighton occupies the head of Big Cottonwood Canyon, sitting higher in elevation than neighboring Solitude and closer to the Wasatch ridgeline. This position—at 8,755 feet base elevation and climbing to 10,500 feet—puts Brighton in the snow zone where storms deposit their heaviest loads.

The resort traces its roots to 1936, making it one of Utah's oldest ski areas. A group of alpine enthusiasts from Salt Lake City built a rope tow on Mount Millicent and created what would become a Salt Lake institution. For nearly ninety years, Brighton has served as the training ground where locals learn to ski and the proving ground where park skiers develop their craft.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Brighton's culture is distinctly different from the luxury-oriented resorts. This is a place for locals who've skied here since childhood, for college students on season pass budgets, and for park skiers who measure winters in rail slides and kicker sessions.

GETTING THERE

Brighton is at the head of Big Cottonwood Canyon, reached from the Salt Lake Valley. Winter traffic, road controls and traction requirements can substantially lengthen the journey. Check the canyon road report before leaving.

Winter parking reservations are required on designated busy days and arrival periods, including Fridays, weekends and holidays. A lesson or pass does not remove the need to follow the reservation instructions. Compare the current parking options with UTA’s seasonal ski bus, and check the return timetable if you plan to ski at night.

WHEN TO GO

Midwinter generally offers the main ski season, with the opening and spring finish dependent on conditions. Evening skiing runs on selected dates and terrain, with holiday exceptions; use the current night schedule rather than assuming the same pattern every week.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🏔️

Night Skiing

Outdoor

Selected lifts and terrain operate in the evening; check the current night calendar and your ticket access.

🏔️

Terrain Parks

Outdoor

Multiple progressive parks from beginner features to professional-grade jumps.

🏔️

SolBright Connector

Outdoor

A connection with Solitude when open; check both the trail status and whether your lift product covers the journey.

🏔️

Snake Creek Pass

Outdoor

A mountain-area landmark near terrain beyond the controlled resort boundary; use qualified local guidance and current avalanche information for any backcountry plans.

WHERE TO STAY

Brighton Lodge provides private-bathroom and private dorm-style rooms at the resort; Brighton Vacation Rentals offers named chalet suites for self-catering groups. Silver Fork Lodge is a small Big Cottonwood Canyon base with breakfast included and a restaurant. The Cliff Lodge is at Snowbird in a different canyon, so compare the road journey before choosing it for Brighton ski days. Confirm winter availability, lift routes and the selected room or rental’s facilities before booking.

THE FOOD SCENE

Brighton’s base offers several useful kinds of meal stop: Alpine Rose for cafeteria and grab-and-go food, Molly Green’s for a pub meal, and Brighton Store for quick food and supplies. Silver Fork Lodge adds a rustic sit-down restaurant in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Log Haven is a more formal destination dinner in separate Millcreek Canyon; plan the drive rather than treating it as a stop beside Brighton.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Molly Green’s is Brighton’s base-area pub option, with drinks, a fireplace and games that suit a relaxed post-ski gathering. Silver Fork Lodge offers another sit-down meal or drink farther down Big Cottonwood Canyon. Choose between staying around the mountain and returning to your Salt Lake Valley accommodation for the evening.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Arrange parking or bus travel before heading up the canyon.
  • 💡Choose a park or piste around current openings and your ability.
  • 💡Check night ticket access and the last bus before planning an evening session.
  • 💡The SolBright connection depends on open terrain and the terms of your lift product.
