THE REGION

Cardrona sits above the valley between Wānaka and Queenstown, combining alpine skiing with a Southern Lakes holiday. Wānaka offers a lake-town base, while Queenstown has a larger range of visitor services and nightlife. Soho adds to the mountain’s broad ski terrain; summer brings mountain biking, carting and lake outings.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Plan meals around whether you are skiing, staying in the valley or spending time in Wānaka. On the mountain, Captain’s Pizzeria is in Captain’s Basin, while The Mezz offers table-service dining above Base Café in the main base building. Both give a ski day a different kind of pause: a quick basin stop or a more leisurely meal.

Back in the valley, Cardrona Hotel combines a historic setting with a restaurant and beer garden. In Wānaka, Federal Diner is tucked down an alley off Helwick Street for breakfast, brunch or lunch, with indoor seating and a courtyard. These are useful reasons to leave time for a meal around the day’s outdoor plans. Francesca Wānaka on Ardmore Street adds an Italian dinner option with wood-fired pizza and house-made pasta.

GETTING THERE

Queenstown is the main airport gateway. Compare a prebooked ski bus from Queenstown or Wānaka with driving to Cardrona. The mountain access road is unsealed; carry chains and fit them when directed. The Pines shuttle offers an alternative to driving the full mountain road. Learners and visitors collecting rentals should use the main base facilities; Valley View parking requires chairlift access and intermediate skiing. Allow extra time for weather, fitting equipment and peak-day traffic.

WHEN TO GO

Winter skiing generally runs from June into early spring, with July and August the main midwinter planning period. September and early October can offer spring skiing when conditions permit. For summer mountain biking or carting, use the separate summer operating calendar.

WHERE TO STAY

Choose between the on-mountain apartments, Cardrona village and a Wānaka town stay. Cardrona’s slopeside apartments offer several self-catering layouts; buy groceries before heading up and note the stair access. Cardrona Hotel pairs historic rooms with its restaurant and beer garden in the village.

In Wānaka, Wanaka View Motel and Clearbrook offer kitchen-equipped accommodation in different sizes. The Brownston provides shared and private hostel rooms with communal cooking facilities. Match the room and bathroom layout to your group, then arrange your daily mountain journey; a town booking does not itself include a Cardrona shuttle.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Choose your accommodation around the daily mountain journey, not just the room price.
  • 💡Book town-bus seats in advance, or check the Pines shuttle arrangements for your visit.
  • 💡Match lesson, lift and rental products to your group’s needs.

Individual listings retain their own sources and check dates. A source check covers only the named details; it does not confirm availability. Snowfall averages describe climate, not a forecast.

The main base area is at 1,670 m, but skiable terrain extends lower. Lift count includes learning carpets and surface tows.

The resort lists its highest lift at 1,860 m. The older 2,087 m figure in the destination guide is not reliable.

The published run count is 47 groomable runs, not a count of all off-piste terrain.
