VALAIS, SWISS ALPS

THE REGION

Crans-Montana is a sun-drenched twin resort perched on a broad plateau at 1,500m above the Rhône Valley in the Valais. With 140 km of pistes climbing to the Plaine Morte glacier at 3,000m, outstanding golf courses, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere, it bridges winter sports and year-round alpine lifestyle. The south-facing aspect delivers over 300 days of sunshine per year, and panoramic views stretch from the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc. The resort has hosted the European Masters golf tournament and FIS Alpine World Cup races, earning a reputation as a sporting destination beyond just skiing.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Crans-Montana has a distinctly chic, understated Swiss ambiance quite different from rowdy après-ski resorts. The twin towns of Crans and Montana blend modern luxury with Valais wine culture — the vineyards of Sierre and Salgesch are visible from the slopes. The resort has a strong arts scene with galleries and cultural events. Local Valais specialties include raclette (originating from this region), dried beef (viande séchée), and Fendant wine.

GETTING THERE

Travel by train to Sierre, then continue to the plateau by funicular or bus. The funicular station is a signed walk from the railway station; check the current connection and your onward journey to the hotel or lift. Maintenance can replace a funicular journey with bus services.

Geneva and Zürich are airport options with onward rail or road transfers. If considering Sion, check the actual flight and transfer for your dates. Drivers approach through the Rhône Valley and climb to the resort; allow extra time in winter weather.

WHEN TO GO

Ski season runs December to April, with the Plaine Morte glacier extending limited skiing into spring. The south-facing slopes enjoy exceptional sunshine but can soften quickly in spring. January and February provide the best combination of snow and sun. Summer is equally popular for golf, hiking, and mountain biking from June through September.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🏔️

Plaine Morte Glacier

Outdoor

High-mountain scenery with marked winter outing options when the lifts and designated routes operate; choose the current route for your activity.

🏔️

Bisse du Ro Trail

Outdoor

A scenic irrigation-channel path with exposed cliff sections. Plan it around the published route status and suitable walking conditions; use designated winter routes for a snow-season outing.

🍽️

Valais Wine Tasting

Dining

Discover Fendant, Petite Arvine, and Cornalin wines at tasting rooms in Sierre, the sunniest town in Switzerland

🎭

Fondation Opale

Culture

An art visit in nearby Lens, focused on contemporary Aboriginal art and dialogue with other contemporary artists. Check the current exhibition and visitor arrangements.

🏔️

Golf Club Crans-sur-Sierre

Outdoor

Play on the legendary course that hosts the European Masters tournament, set against a panoramic alpine backdrop

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Lac Grenon & Lac Moubra

Family

Enjoy lake-area scenery from open walking routes. For skating, check Ycoor’s rink and skate-hire sessions rather than assuming frozen lakes are open.

WHERE TO STAY

Compare the setting, room format and mountain journey of each property. LeCrans sits above the resort at the forest edge, with rooms, suites and apartments plus spa facilities. Guarda Golf combines rooms and apartment suites with dining and wellness facilities; confirm lift transfers and ski access within the package you choose.

Helvetia Intergolf offers a short lift walk and an on-request shuttle, while Hotel de la Forêt provides a quieter hotel base near the valley funicular. Hotel Olympic is a central option with rooms and a six-person loft. Check the route from your property to the lift or meeting point you plan to use.

THE FOOD SCENE

The dining choices range from a hotel restaurant evening to a mountain terrace lunch. LeMontBlanc is at LeCrans on Chemin du Mont-Blanc, where seasonal local ingredients accompany Alpine views from a rotunda dining room.

Chetzeron pairs contemporary alpine cooking with panoramic terraces high on the ski slopes. Restaurant Plumachit, on the Violettes–Aminona side, offers a more traditional Valais meal and a terrace with a children’s play area. Match the meal to your day’s route and confirm seasonal access for mountain venues.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

A quiet drink with a view fits Crans-Montana well. Chetzeron’s lounge offers local wines by the glass, cocktails and regional fruit juices beside the fire, with terrace space when conditions suit. Arrange mountain access and the return before making an evening plan.

Back around the resort villages, a restaurant evening offers another way to enjoy the region’s food and wine. LeMontBlanc at LeCrans is a choice for a planned meal rather than a spontaneous stop on Rue du Prado.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Choose the current Plaine Morte lift and marked route for a high-mountain outing.
  • 💡For a rest-day walk, use the official winter map and current trail status; summer cliff paths need separate planning.
  • 💡Consider a Valais wine visit around Sierre, checking appointments and the journey back.
