THE REGION

Gudauri sits on the Georgian Military Highway in the Greater Caucasus. Hotels and apartments are spread among different lift areas, so the exact accommodation address matters more than the broad Gudauri name. A piste-based holiday and a guided off-piste trip need different planning.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Make time for Georgian food alongside the skiing. Drunk Cherry in New Gudauri offers Georgian and European dishes near the slopes, while Montis at Hotel Carpe Diem pairs a warm dining room with local wine. Gudauri Loft provides a more scenic sit-down option with mountain views from its seventh-floor restaurant.

For après drinks, Gudauri Lodge’s slopeside bar combines cocktails, music and views. Check seasonal service and reservations for the venues you choose, and plan your evening around your accommodation and transport.

GETTING THERE

Tbilisi is the main airport gateway. Allow several hours for the mountain-road journey, with extra time for winter weather and stops; private transfers are a practical option. Confirm your accommodation’s exact entrance and whether the final approach is suitable for the booked vehicle.

Check the Georgian Roads Department’s restrictions before departure. Do not assume uninterrupted access over the Gudauri–Kobi/Jvari Pass route towards Stepantsminda. Arrange any Kazbegi excursion separately from your ski-base transfer.

WHEN TO GO

Midwinter is the main snow-focused period, with New Year holidays particularly busy. Later winter and spring bring changing snow conditions and longer days. Use the current lift report and avalanche information when deciding where to ski; weather can change both mountain and road plans.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🏔️

Mountain views

Outdoor

Compare sightseeing lift options with the current opening and visibility report; buy the appropriate pedestrian ticket.

🎭

Stepantsminda and Gergeti

Culture

Plan this as a separate excursion beyond Gudauri. Confirm road conditions and local transport before committing to a winter visit.

🏔️

Zhinvali scenery

Outdoor

Allow a weather-appropriate stop on the Tbilisi approach for reservoir views, using a safe designated stopping place.

🍽️

Pasanauri food stop

Dining

Try Georgian dumplings on the journey through Pasanauri, arranging the stop with your driver.

WHERE TO STAY

Choose your exact Gudauri base around the lift journey and room format. Gudauri Lodge offers slopeside rooms and suites with dining and an open-air hot tub. Carpe Diem combines nearby lift access with ski rental, storage and Montis restaurant. Marco Polo offers a hotel stay with pools, wellness and indoor activities for families and groups.

For self-catering, compare a named apartment such as New Gudauri Loft 1 Apartment 515 and confirm the unit’s kitchen, bedding and arrival arrangements. Gudauri Hut is a village hotel option; check its current rooms, meals and walking route to the chairlift. Choose lodging in Gudauri for a Gudauri ski trip, and assess any stay farther away around the actual winter road journey.
