THE REGION

Cortina sits in Otari at the northern end of the Hakuba Valley. Hotel Green Plaza anchors the compact base, while accommodation elsewhere in the valley offers more village dining choices but requires a planned journey to the lifts. Gentle pistes and steeper terrain support different ski days; powder conditions depend on the weather.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Soba is a useful introduction to Otari’s food: the dining room at Otari Meisankan pairs handmade noodles with a shop selling regional products. Cortina’s hotel-centered base and the village’s scattered dining stops offer different ways to spend the evening, so plan around where you are staying.

GETTING THERE

From Tokyo, rail via Nagano followed by onward road transport is a useful starting point. Hotel Green Plaza lists reserved arrival transfers from Nagano and Minami-Otari; check which operates for your stay.

If staying in central Hakuba, plan the trip north to Cortina and the final return service before choosing accommodation. A local hotel shuttle does not necessarily serve Cortina. Allow extra time for winter roads, equipment collection and lesson meeting points.

WHEN TO GO

Midwinter is the main period for a snow-focused trip. Later winter can suit a more relaxed stay as days lengthen, with snow quality and available terrain varying. Choose travel dates around the operator’s current operating information rather than assuming a particular powder day or closing date.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🧘

Hotel hot-spring bathing

Wellness

Hotel Green Plaza has natural hot-spring baths. Check the access arrangements for your stay or visit.

🍽️

Otari food and local products

Dining

Combine a village meal with browsing regional products at Otari Meisankan; plan transport away from the ski base.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

A relaxed hotel evening

Family

Choose a room and meal plan that suits your group if you prefer to stay at the base after skiing.

WHERE TO STAY

Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba is the direct Cortina-base choice, with the slopes in front, hot-spring baths, buffet dining and several room layouts. Compare the inclusions of the specific room or meal plan you book.

Sierra Resort Hakuba offers a forest setting, onsen baths and on-site dining in the northern valley near Iwatake and Tsugaike. Plan road transport to Cortina separately from any arrival transfer.

La Neige Nishikan and Morino Lodge are in Wadano near Happo-one; Hakuba Powder Lodge is farther south in central Hakuba between Happo-one and Goryu/47. These offer different room styles, atmosphere or shared cooking facilities, but require a planned journey to Cortina. Check actual winter bus routes or arrange road transport rather than assuming every hotel shuttle serves Cortina.

THE FOOD SCENE

Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba has buffet dining at the base, making it a practical option when staying on site; confirm the meals included in your booking. For a village lunch, Otari Meisankan near the village hall serves handmade soba and sells regional products.

Dining is spread across Otari and the wider Hakuba Valley. Choose an off-site meal around your transport and check service before setting out.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

A relaxed Cortina evening can revolve around a hotel dinner and a separate visit to Green Plaza’s natural hot-spring baths, subject to the hotel’s access arrangements. For a beer-and-food outing elsewhere in Otari, Hakuba Beer Garage in Tsugaike is a brewery restaurant; arrange your return transport.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Choose between Cortina-base convenience and a village stay with a planned journey to the mountain.
  • 💡Match lesson language and discipline before booking; arrange rental equipment separately.
  • 💡Use the current map and patrol advice to distinguish open pistes, closed areas and the resort boundary.
  • 💡Treat backcountry as a separately prepared outing with appropriate training, equipment and local guidance.
