THE REGION

Sanosaka sits by Lake Aoki at the southern end of the Hakuba Valley. The ski area pairs accessible practice slopes with a steeper mogul course. Staying in Hakuba Village adds more lodging and dining options but requires transport to this hill.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Lake Aoki forms the backdrop to the ski area. For a slower break with the view, try Café Capella at Shirayukidaira. Castor Plaza offers a sheltered view of skiers on the slopes.

GETTING THERE

From Tokyo, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano, then continue by bus toward Hakuba. For the final leg, check the winter Hakuba–Omachi valley shuttle or arrange road transport. Minami-Kamishiro is the nearby JR Oito Line station, more than a kilometre from the resort. Plan the last leg with your ski gear and snow conditions in mind.

WHEN TO GO

The planned 2026–27 season runs from mid-December into late March, subject to snow. Choose a clear day for views over Lake Aoki, and check the separate night-ski calendar if you hope to stay after daylight.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🏔️

Lake Aoki Scenic Views

Outdoor

Look over the lake and surrounding snowy hills from the Lake View side on a clear day.

WHERE TO STAY

For a Sanosaka ski trip, look in the Kamishiro area first. Country House Nonohana offers twin and Japanese-style rooms, and Lodge Nakaya offers Japanese-style rooms with a choice of meal plans. Lodge Wakata is close to Minami-Kamishiro Station and has a drying room. If Lake Aoki is the draw, Petit Pension Alpha sits on the Omachi shore. Check winter road access and arrange the journey to the lifts before reserving a lakeside or central Hakuba stay.

THE FOOD SCENE

Castor Plaza has breakfast, lunch and café service in its second-floor restaurant. Shirayukidaira Café Capella overlooks Lake Aoki. For a separate Hakuba outing, Sounds Like Cafe in Echoland serves burgers and sandwiches.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

If you are returning to Hakuba Village for the evening, arrange the journey back from Sanosaka before the last lifts. For a daytime break, Café Capella and the restaurant at Castor Plaza let a group meet without leaving the hill.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Choose Paradise Downhill for gentle practice and New Paradise for advanced mogul skiing.
  • 💡Pause near Shirayukidaira for Lake Aoki views.
  • 💡Compare the valley shuttle schedule with your final lift or night-ski session.
