THE REGION

The Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania is a scenic region defined by the long, forested ridges of the Allegheny Mountains. Hidden Valley Resort sits atop a plateau at about 2,800 feet, surrounded by the hardwood forests and mountain laurel that give the region its name. This area is rich in history and architecture, most famously as the home of Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater. The Laurel Highlands serve as the primary mountain getaway for Pittsburgh, about 70 miles to the west, offering a blend of outdoor recreation, history, and resort-style amenities across all four seasons.

THE LOCAL SCENE

A Laurel Highlands ski trip can mix the convenience of a lodge meal with a more leisurely restaurant outing. Hidden Valley’s café and pub keep the mountain day simple; Donegal’s Out of the Fire Café gives an evening meal its own place in the itinerary.

GETTING THERE

Use 1 Craighead Drive, Hidden Valley, Pennsylvania for the resort, with road approaches from Pennsylvania Turnpike exits 91 or 110. Pittsburgh International and Arnold Palmer Regional in Latrobe are the airport options listed by the resort. Compare onward transport and allow for winter road conditions.

Follow parking attendants toward the areas near the Main Lodge, Avalanche Lodge or Highlands Resort Realty office. Match your arrival point to your lesson or rental booking.

WHEN TO GO

Plan a winter ski visit around open terrain and the current operating calendar; snowmaking supplements natural snow. Evening skiing provides another session choice. For a summer visit, the separately operated Highlands Golf Club offers the retained golf option, subject to its booking calendar.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🎭

Fallingwater

Culture

Compare the house tours and grounds experiences at Frank Lloyd Wright’s landmark home. Check the calendar, age and access requirements for your visit and reserve ahead.

🎭

Fort Ligonier

Culture

Visit the reconstructed French and Indian War fort and museum in the heart of charming Ligonier town.

🏔️

Laurel Hill State Park Snowshoeing

Outdoor

Snowshoe or cross-country ski through the scenic trails of Laurel Hill State Park, just minutes from Hidden Valley.

🎭

Ligonier Town Square Shopping

Culture

Browse antique shops, bookstores, and local boutiques around Ligonier's picturesque diamond-shaped town square.

🎭

Kentuck Knob

Culture

Visit another Frank Lloyd Wright home perched on a hilltop with sweeping mountain views, located near Fallingwater.

WHERE TO STAY

For a hotel stay, compare a Donegal base with accommodation at nearby Seven Springs. Holiday Inn Express & Suites Donegal offers rooms and suites, breakfast, an indoor pool and a whirlpool; plan your own drive to Hidden Valley. Seven Springs Main Lodge Hotel is slopeside at Seven Springs, with a separate road journey to Hidden Valley. Check ticket or pass access for each mountain. For an individual condominium or townhome, verify its exact address, lift route, sleeping layout, cooking facilities and included services before booking.

THE FOOD SCENE

Sunrise Sunset Cafe on the upper level of the Ski Lodge is the quick-meal option between runs. Glaciers Pub offers sandwiches, soup and drinks, while Clocktower adds another resort dining choice.

For an off-site meal, Out of the Fire Café is on State Route 31 in Donegal. It serves New American food with a full-service bar; dinner reservations are recommended, while lunch is seated first-come. Plan the drive and meal separately from your lift time.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Glaciers Pub is a resort option for food and a drink after skiing. Out of the Fire Café in Donegal offers a separate sit-down evening with a full-service bar. Choose around your accommodation and arrange the return journey.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Compare Hidden Valley with nearby Seven Springs and Laurel Mountain when planning a longer stay.
  • 💡Check Fallingwater’s tour and grounds calendars before adding it to your ski trip.
  • 💡Choose a lesson and arrival point around your group’s experience.
  • 💡Check a rental property’s actual walk to the lifts and winter access before booking.
