THE REGION

The Catskill Mountains of southeastern New York have a storied history as a retreat from New York City, dating back to the great resort era of the mid-twentieth century. Hunter Mountain sits in the heart of the Catskill Park, a patchwork of state forest preserve and private land that covers over 700,000 acres of rugged, wooded terrain. The mountains here rise to over 4,000 feet, carved by deep hollows and cloves that channel dramatic waterfalls like Kaaterskill Falls, one of the tallest in New York. The region has experienced a major renaissance in recent years, with a wave of new restaurants, boutique hotels, and creative businesses breathing fresh energy into the classic mountain towns of Hunter, Tannersville, and Windham.

THE LOCAL SCENE

The area offers several different ways to finish a mountain day: a base-lodge drink, a reserved meal overlooking the mountains at Scribner’s, or pizza on Main Street in Hunter. Tannersville’s Last Chance adds cheese-shop browsing and an antique-filled dining room. Choose the setting that fits your evening and account for the journey between the resort and the towns.

GETTING THERE

Plan a road trip to 64 Klein Avenue in Hunter using the New York State Thruway and the Catskills approaches. Albany and Stewart are regional airport options; New York City airports require a longer onward journey. If arriving by train, arrange the transfer from the station ahead of time.

Use the main base for lessons, rentals and ticket services. The North Lot off Route 23A and Deming Road suits visitors who already have lift access and equipment; it has no ticket sales, lockers or rentals. Allow extra time for winter roads and busy arrivals.

WHEN TO GO

Winter skiing depends on open terrain and the operating calendar, with snowmaking supporting natural snow. January through March is a useful broad planning period. Midweek visits can suit those seeking a quieter trip; compare holiday and weekend plans with accommodation and lesson availability. Summer mountain activities follow their own calendar.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🏔️

Kaaterskill Falls viewpoint

Outdoor

Plan a visit to the observation platform from designated DEC parking, such as Laurel House Road. Check access and trail conditions; winter ice can change the outing, and the lower falls require a separate descent.

🎭

Tannersville Village Dining and Shopping

Culture

Explore the colorfully painted storefronts of Tannersville, with boutiques, galleries, and some of the Catskills' best restaurants.

🎭

Catskill Mountain Foundation Performing Arts

Culture

Catch a concert, film screening, or art exhibit at the Catskill Mountain Foundation's Orpheum Film and Performing Arts Center.

🏔️

Cross-Country Skiing at Mountain Trails

Outdoor

Mountain Trails Cross Country Ski Center in Tannersville is a regional Nordic option. Confirm snow conditions, open trails and equipment arrangements before making the trip.

WHERE TO STAY

For a slopeside stay, compare the rooms and condo-style suites at Kaatskill Mountain Club, checking the kitchen and sleeping layout of the unit you book. Scribner’s Catskill Lodge in Hunter offers main-lodge rooms and separate cabins with on-site dining. Fairlawn Inn is also in Hunter: a restored Victorian inn with individually themed rooms, private baths and breakfast.

Choose between mountain-base convenience, a lodge-and-cabin setting and a smaller historic inn. For an off-mountain stay, plan the daily journey to Hunter and confirm any transport directly with the property. Tannersville and surrounding Catskills rentals offer other bases; compare the daily drive with staying in Hunter. Catskill and Kingston can be alternatives for a hotel-based road trip.

THE FOOD SCENE

For a meal at the resort, Van Winkle’s is inside Kaatskill Mountain Club, while Main Bar offers pub food during kitchen service in the base lodge. Prospect at Scribner’s is a separate restaurant in Hunter, with New American cooking, mountain views and tables open to outside guests.

MaMa’s Pizza Parlor & Restaurant on Main Street adds a family-owned Italian option in Hunter. In Tannersville, Last Chance combines a restaurant and cheese shop with an antique-filled setting. These are distinct town stops; plan transport around your chosen meal.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Main Bar keeps après in Hunter’s main base lodge, and CopperTree Atrium Bar offers another resort stop with slopeside views. For a meal or drinks away from the base, Prospect is at Scribner’s in Hunter, while Last Chance is in Tannersville. Check venue service and arrange your return before settling in.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Choose the main base when your day includes lessons or rental pickup.
  • 💡Consider a midweek visit for a quieter mountain break.
  • 💡Use the lift and trail map to plan summit access and your return to the base.
  • 💡Reserve a meal in Hunter or Tannersville and plan the journey from your accommodation.
