THE REGION

Ischgl sits in Austria’s Paznaun valley between the Silvretta and Verwall ranges. Its linked ski area crosses into Samnaun in Switzerland, so a ski day can combine Austrian mountain pistes with a Swiss village visit. Samnaun’s duty-free shopping adds another reason to plan the journey carefully.

Galtür, Kappl and See offer other valley bases and their own ski areas. Choose accommodation, transport and a lift product for the places you actually intend to visit; a booking in one village does not automatically include every ski area.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Ischgl’s food scene spans very different settings: Tyrolean and international mountain meals at Pardorama, hotel fine dining at Trofana Royal and Yscla, and Japanese-French cooking at Lucy Wang. Schatzi and Niki’s Stadl bring music and social energy to the village après scene.

A ski day in the connected Samnaun sector adds Swiss-side dining at Alp Trida. Treat that as part of a mountain route, with enough time to return by the operating lifts and pistes.

GETTING THERE

From Innsbruck, approach the Paznaun via Landeck and the valley road to Ischgl. Munich and Zurich offer other airport gateways; compare the full transfer rather than relying on a short fixed driving estimate. For public transport, take the train to Landeck-Zams and connect with the valley bus.

Local and ski buses link the valley villages. Included travel depends on a valid personalised guest card or the operator’s ski-pass and equipment conditions; arrange this with your accommodation and check the seasonal timetable. Choose parking and your village arrival point around your accommodation and gondola. The Silvretta High Alpine Road is not a winter route into Ischgl.

WHEN TO GO

Use the published winter calendar and open terrain when choosing dates. Midwinter suits a snow-focused trip, while later-season visits can combine skiing with longer daylight. Major concerts and holiday periods can change accommodation demand and the village atmosphere. Summer hiking and biking follow a separate lift calendar.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🎭

Duty-free shopping in Samnaun

Culture

Make Samnaun a planned cross-border stop, allowing time for the return lifts. Check customs allowances before shopping.

🧘

Silvretta Therme

Wellness

Pools, saunas and restaurants offer an alternative to a full ski day. Choose the admission and facilities that suit your group.

🏔️

Ice skating and curling

Outdoor

The ice rink around Silvretta Therme adds another winter outing. Check seasonal operation and equipment arrangements.

🏔️

Night tobogganing

Outdoor

Consider a scheduled evening on Ischgl’s long toboggan run. Confirm operation, lift access and sled hire before planning your evening.

🏔️

Silvretta High Alpine Road

Outdoor

A summer sightseeing possibility from the Tyrolean side toward Bielerhöhe when access is open. Do not plan a through-drive to Vorarlberg; the road also closes for winter.

🎭

Alpinarium Galtür

Culture

Visit Galtür’s alpine museum, incorporated into the village’s avalanche-protection structure. Combine it with time in the village and check exhibition opening.

WHERE TO STAY

Choose an Ischgl village hotel around the lift access and evening atmosphere you prefer. Trofana Royal is a short walk from the Silvrettabahn, with a valley run beside the hotel and extensive dining and wellness choices. Madlein offers varied rooms, selected kitchen apartments, on-site ski hire and pool-and-sauna facilities. Sonne is a central option with dining and wellness; confirm its planned new indoor pool is open if that is important. Garni Siegele keeps the Pardatschgratbahn close and combines breakfast with rooms and an apartment.

For a separate Galtür base, Hotel Garni Dreiländer in Wirl offers ensuite or simpler shared-shower rooms, breakfast and a ski room. Staying there means planning your journey to Ischgl and checking the ticket and transport arrangements for the areas you intend to ski.

THE FOOD SCENE

Plan mountain meals around your ski route: Pardorama offers self-service and à-la-carte dining at the Pardatschgrat. On the Swiss side, Restaurant Alp Trida combines self-service dining with the upstairs La Marmotte restaurant; allow time for the return lifts and pistes.

In the village, Paznaunerstube at Trofana Royal and Stüva at Hotel Yscla are options for a planned fine-dining evening. Lucy Wang Ischgl pairs Japanese-style sushi with French cuisine, while Schatzi at Elizabeth Arthotel adds pizza and restaurant meals beside the slope. Reserve special dinners and check seasonal service.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Schatzi at Elizabeth Arthotel combines slope-side dining with an outdoor ice bar and house music. Niki’s Stadl on Dorfstraße is another option for DJs, drinks and dancing. Choose your stop around the atmosphere you want and check the venue’s winter programme; food service and bar hours can differ.

For an evening centred on a meal, book a village restaurant such as Paznaunerstube, Stüva or Lucy Wang. You can enjoy Ischgl’s dining scene without planning a long night of bar-hopping.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Plan the return lifts before committing to a ski-day visit to Samnaun.
  • 💡Choose a quieter accommodation location if nightlife is not the focus of your trip.
  • 💡Reserve popular restaurants and allow time to travel between your hotel and dinner.
  • 💡Compare the actual areas covered by your ticket before adding Galtür, Kappl or See.
