JACKSON HOLE VALLEY

THE REGION

The Tetons rise abruptly above Jackson Hole, with the Snake River winding through the valley below. Jackson is the town; Teton Village is the mountain base. That distinction shapes the trip: the village favors a quick ski start, while town offers galleries, restaurants and a wider evening scene.

Grand Teton National Park and the National Elk Refuge make the valley more than a ski destination. Winter brings wildlife viewing and snow-covered landscapes, but also road closures that change how places connect. Plan an outing around an open access point and the season rather than a summer map.

Ranching, Western art and outdoor recreation give Jackson much of its character. A stay can combine demanding skiing with a quieter afternoon around Town Square or a guided wildlife trip, without filling every day with another mountain mission.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Jackson’s Western storefronts, antler arches and galleries sit alongside a busy mountain-town dining scene. Around Town Square, visitors can combine shops, a café stop and dinner on foot; Teton Village keeps the evening closer to the ski base.

Wildlife is part of the surrounding landscape, not a scheduled attraction. At the National Elk Refuge, the visitor center, designated viewing areas and seasonal sleigh rides offer ways to understand the wintering herds. Leave space for animals and let current access and conditions shape the outing.

GETTING THERE

Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) is inside Grand Teton National Park. For a winter transfer to Teton Village, travel through the Jackson and Wilson road network; the park section of Moose-Wilson Road closes seasonally. Arrange an airport transfer or winter-suitable rental around your arrival.

Idaho Falls and Salt Lake City are longer road approaches. Choose the route using current road conditions; a route over Teton Pass can be affected by storms and closures. Allow substantial winter driving time instead of treating a summer estimate as a promise.

START connects Jackson and Teton Village. Town routes and the Stilson-to-village connection are free; the trip from Jackson to the village carries a fare. Village day parking is generally paid. Compare a bus-accessible town stay, a village hotel and the Stilson park-and-ride option, then check the schedule and parking terms for your dates.

WHEN TO GO

January through early March is a useful broad window for a winter ski trip. Choose dates around school holidays, the operator calendar and the kind of terrain your group wants; storms, visibility and coverage can change the experience. Early season may offer less open terrain, while spring brings changing snow through the day.

Summer and early autumn suit hiking, valley cycling, river outings and wildlife trips. High trails, park roads and mountain activities have their own seasons. Shoulder-season stays can be quieter, with fewer services operating.

WHERE TO STAY

Teton Village puts you at the mountain base, with a range of room formats and access arrangements. Caldera House offers larger suites near the tram, while Hotel Terra includes guestrooms and selected kitchen-equipped studios and suites. Four Seasons and Teton Mountain Lodge offer slopeside stays with wellness facilities; The Hostel provides private en-suite rooms in a simpler hotel format. Faraway Jackson Hole is the current name at the former Snake River Lodge property; confirm which pool and wellness facilities will be open for your stay.

Staying in the town of Jackson gives you a town base for dining and evenings, with a separate journey to Teton Village. Check current START routes, fares and schedules or arrange your own transport. For a condo or ranch stay elsewhere in the valley, compare its actual address, winter access and room facilities before booking.

THE FOOD SCENE

At the mountain, Corbet’s Cabin is the waffle stop reached by the Aerial Tram. In Teton Village, The Handle Bar at Four Seasons offers pub dining, while Il Villaggio Osteria at Hotel Terra serves rustic Italian meals around its wood-fired pizza oven.

In Jackson, Snake River Grill offers New American fine dining, and Local Restaurant & Bar on Town Square combines a steakhouse meal with burgers and a full bar. Persephone Bakery adds French-style baked goods, café food and coffee. The Bird on US-89 is a casual bar-food option that does not take reservations. Choose your evening around the restaurant’s actual location and arrange the journey back.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Mangy Moose Saloon in Teton Village is a food, drinks and live-music option; check its seasonal opening and event calendar. The Handle Bar at Four Seasons offers another resort-base setting for a pub meal and après drinks, and Il Villaggio Osteria provides an Italian meal at Hotel Terra.

For a Jackson evening, Local Restaurant & Bar sits on Town Square, while The Bird is a separate stop on US-89 with a relaxed bar setting. Plan transport between town, your lodging and Teton Village before settling in.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Choose terrain by ability: Teewinot and Après Vous offer a different day from the demanding summit routes.
  • 💡Compare the paid Jackson–Teton Village bus journey with free local town and Stilson connections.
  • 💡Leave time for the National Elk Refuge visitor center and a seasonal wildlife outing.
  • 💡Use the park road map for scenic drives; several roads close to vehicles in winter.
  • 💡Plan town dinner and the return journey together rather than assuming a late bus.
