THE REGION

Les Deux Alpes sits in the Oisans above the Romanche valley. Jandri links the resort with the high-altitude ski area, while Venosc is a separate village reached by its own gondola. Check that gondola’s last return if you plan dinner or overnight accommodation in the valley.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Les Deux Alpes maintains a distinctly French character that sets it apart from more international resorts. The main street stretches for over a kilometer, lined with shops, restaurants, and bars that cater primarily to French visitors. English is widely spoken, but French remains the default language, creating an immersive cultural experience.

The food scene ranges from satisfying to exceptional. Mountain restaurants serve traditional Savoyard fare—tartiflette, fondue, raclette—alongside more casual options. Le Diable au Coeur, perched high on the mountain with glacier views, offers elevated cuisine in a stunning setting. Down in the village, Le Panoramic delivers classic French mountain cooking, while pizzerias and crêperies handle casual meals.

The après-ski and nightlife scene pulses with energy, particularly during French holiday weeks. Smithy's and the Polar Bear Pub anchor the British-influenced bar scene, while L'Opéra and other clubs keep dancing going until the early hours. The French approach to nightlife means things start late—dinner at 8 or 9 pm, bars filling after 10, clubs not hitting their stride until midnight.

The resort's practical character means prices remain more accessible than in upscale destinations. Self-catering apartments dominate the accommodation scene, and supermarkets stock everything needed for cooking in. This budget-friendly approach attracts a younger crowd, including gap-year skiers, seasonal workers, and students on holiday.

GETTING THERE

Grenoble is the rail gateway. Continue from the bus station to Les Deux Alpes and check the connection for your date. Seasonal airport transfers are another option from Grenoble-Isère or Lyon. By road from Grenoble, follow the RD1091 toward Briançon via Le Bourg-d’Oisans. Turn at the Chambon dam for the climb on the D213.

WHEN TO GO

For a winter holiday with mixed abilities, choose dates when the village learning areas and the high-mountain lifts you want are both operating. In spring, the upper mountain can have a different calendar from the lower returns. The resort publishes a separate high-altitude programme with its own dates and arrangements for leisure skiers and training groups. Check that programme before booking a summer ski trip.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🏔️

A separate day at La Grave

Outdoor

La Grave’s cable car serves unmarked high-mountain itineraries. Arrange a qualified guide and plan your outward and return travel separately.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Ice grotto

Family

Check access to the high-altitude ice grotto and the return lift before setting out as a pedestrian.

🏔️

Freestyle facilities

Outdoor

Check which features are open to the public and which sessions are reserved for training.

🎭

Venosc village

Culture

Ride the separate Venosc gondola for a valley outing. Plan around its timetable.

🏔️

Tandem paragliding

Outdoor

Book with a local operator and leave flexibility for wind and weather.

🏔️

Spring high-altitude skiing

Outdoor

The resort publishes a separate high-altitude programme. Confirm dates and public access before planning a trip around it.

WHERE TO STAY

Decide where you want to start the ski day before choosing a room. Hôtel Côte Brune is at the foot of the central slopes and has a boot dryer. Chalet Mounier has duplex suites for families or groups, along with a spa and seasonal dining. Hôtel Les Flocons is another central hotel with a bar and lounge.

For self-catering, Le Flocon d’Or is in the upper Vénosc district of the resort, by the Super Venosc gondola. Check the route to Jandri or your lesson meeting point and the current village shuttle timetable. If booking down in Venosc village itself, also check the valley lift’s operating hours for the return trip.
