THE REGION

The White Mountains of New Hampshire represent New England's most dramatic alpine scenery—6,000-foot peaks rising from forested valleys, with the famous Kancamagus Highway winding through the heart of this wilderness. Loon Mountain sits ideally positioned along this scenic corridor, offering accessible skiing in a setting that feels far more remote than its 2-hour proximity to Boston.

The "Kanc" (as locals call the highway) is one of America's great mountain roads, connecting Lincoln and Conway through the White Mountain National Forest. In winter, this corridor transforms into a snow globe of frosted evergreens and mountain vistas, with Loon Mountain anchoring the western end where the road begins its ascent.

Lincoln and neighboring Woodstock form a compact base area with the character of classic New England ski towns—white church steeples, local restaurants, and residents who've been part of this skiing community for generations. The town developed around logging and papermaking before skiing arrived, and that working-class heritage remains visible in the practical, friendly local culture.

What distinguishes this region is the combination of genuine wilderness accessibility with family-friendly resort amenities. You can ski groomed intermediate runs in the morning, then snowshoe into actual backcountry in the afternoon. The White Mountain National Forest surrounds the developed areas, offering endless exploration for those who venture beyond the resort boundaries.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Lincoln and Woodstock maintain authentic small-town New England character despite serving as ski destinations. Local families have skied here for generations, creating a community where resort workers and longtime residents outnumber tourists.

The vibe is distinctly unpretentious—more fleece and work boots than designer ski wear. Conversations at local bars include equal parts ski conditions and Patriots discussions. This is New England working-class skiing culture at its most genuine.

GETTING THERE

From Boston or Manchester, follow I-93 north to the Lincoln exit for Route 112 and Loon. Franconia Notch is a separate outing north of Lincoln. Before parking, check whether your lesson or equipment pickup starts at the Governor Adams, Octagon or South Peak base. The resort operates shuttles between open bases during scheduled hours.

WHEN TO GO

January through early March offers the most reliable conditions, with cold temperatures preserving snow quality. Loon's snowmaking operation is extensive, but mid-winter typically brings enough natural snow to open terrain beyond the main trails.

Presidents' Day week draws the largest crowds; visit midweek for notably shorter lift lines. March brings spring skiing conditions with softer snow and longer days—ideal for families seeking a more relaxed pace.

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

WHERE TO STAY

The Mountain Club on Loon has guestrooms and suites at the base of the slopes. The Village of Loon Mountain offers condominiums with pool and recreation facilities. Check the winter route from the specific unit to the lift you intend to use.

RiverWalk is in downtown Lincoln, with suites and a guest shuttle to Loon. Kancamagus Lodge on Route 112 has on-site dining and an indoor pool, while Quality Inn & Suites on US Route 3 offers a continental breakfast. For town hotels and private rentals, plan the drive or confirm the shuttle schedule for your dates.

THE FOOD SCENE

Start the day at Flapjack’s on Main Street in Lincoln. For a mountain lunch, check whether Summit Café is serving on Loon Peak. La Vista at RiverWalk is a town option for Italian dinner. Woodstock Inn Brewery in North Woodstock serves pub food throughout the day.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

For a drink at the mountain, the Paul Bunyan Room upstairs in Octagon Lodge has draft beers and a slopeside deck during ski season. In North Woodstock, head to Woodstock Inn Brewery for house beer and a pub meal.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Use the base named in your lesson or rental booking as the morning meeting point.
  • 💡Plan a Kancamagus Highway scenic drive as a separate outing and check winter road conditions before setting out.
  • 💡For a non-skiing day, consult the activity calendar. Loon lists its sightseeing Gondola Skyride with the warmer-season attractions.
