THE REGION

Arai sits in Myoko, Niigata Prefecture, on Japan’s main island of Honshu. Its appeal combines mountain skiing with a resort-hotel base and the wider region’s food and hot-spring stays.

The mountain offers both marked courses and freeriding zones. A trip can suit different interests when each skier chooses suitable terrain and the group plans around current openings. Staying at the base keeps mountain access simple; a regional inn or lodge adds another side of Myoko, with a separate journey to Arai.

Leave time for Niigata’s rice, sake and local meals. An onsen visit or a day exploring beyond the ski base can give a longer stay variety.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Niigata’s food gives the trip a sense of place. Asahi uses local rice, seafood and seasonal ingredients, while a stop at Hidanan in Arai brings soba and local-vegetable tempura into the day. The wider region’s rice and sake traditions are a useful thread to explore between ski days.

Bathing can be part of the trip, whether at the resort or a regional inn. Choose the facility deliberately, follow its bathing etiquette, and check the room or day-use arrangements that apply to you.

Keep accommodation and transport details in Japanese and carry a translation tool for regional travel and meals. At the resort, English-language instruction provides another option for planning a ski day.

GETTING THERE

Joetsumyoko Station is the rail gateway for the resort’s shuttle, with Hokuriku Shinkansen connections from Tokyo. LOTTE ARAI’s shuttle is for guests staying at its hotel facilities and requires a reservation. It uses the station’s west entrance and separate ARAI and LODGE building stops. Match your train and hotel building to the published service.

If staying elsewhere, arrange the complete journey with your accommodation or a transport provider; do not assume access to the hotel shuttle. A car can help with regional stays and other Myoko ski areas. Allow extra time for winter roads and for onward rail or flight connections.

WHEN TO GO

Choose midwinter for a snow-focused holiday or consider spring for longer days and a different mountain atmosphere. Available terrain and freeride openings depend on conditions; use the operator’s calendar for your travel dates.

Book accommodation and instruction ahead for holidays and busy weekends. Keep some flexibility for regional food, bathing or an outing when you want a day away from skiing.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🧘

Myoko-area onsen

Wellness

Choose a hot-spring facility or inn with day-use or overnight bathing arrangements that suit your trip.

🎭

Sake Brewery Tours

Culture

Explore Niigata sake alongside local food; arrange brewery visits or tastings with the operator.

🏔️

Regional Resort Hopping

Outdoor

Akakura Onsen, Suginohara and Seki Onsen offer different ski-day options. Arrange transport and check each resort’s own ticket and operating information.

🎭

Zenkoji Temple Day Trip

Culture

Consider Nagano’s Zenkoji Temple for a cultural outing, allowing time for the full return journey.

🏔️

Snow Hiking and Snowshoeing

Outdoor

Ask a local operator about guided snowshoe outings suitable for your ability and the current conditions.

🎭

Ryokan Experience

Culture

Compare regional inns for tatami rooms, meals and bathing facilities; choose the particular room and package that fits your stay.

WHERE TO STAY

LOTTE ARAI RESORT is the on-site hotel choice at Arai Mountain Resort’s base. Its room layouts, restaurants, Hoshizora Onsen and pool facilities suit a stay centered on the resort. Hotel guests arriving by rail can reserve the shuttle from Joetsumyoko Station; choose the ARAI or LODGE stop for your room.

The wider Myoko region provides different ways to stay. Eho Ryokan in the Tagiri / Akakura Kanko area combines tatami rooms and futon bedding with hot-spring baths and homemade Niigata food; bathrooms and toilets are shared. Funky Monkey Lodge in Futamata / Akakura St. Moritz Village offers a guest kitchen and communal lounge and dining spaces. Both require a separate transport plan for Arai ski days.

For a green-season countryside stay, APA Hotel & Resort Joetsu-Myoko offers golf, hot-spring bathing, dining and a summer pool. It closes in winter; its advance-reserved transfers serve railway stations during the hotel’s operating season.

THE FOOD SCENE

Hotel dining at Arai has several distinct choices. Asahi in Lodge 2F offers seasonal Japanese meals, while BECO in CLUB 1F focuses on charcoal-grilled steak. On the mountain, SKY RESTAURANT ZEN at Zendana Station is the food-court stop with Kubiki Plain views. Reserve hotel dinners and check seasonal service before setting your plans.

For a local meal beyond the resort, Shikisaikan Hidanan at Michi-no-Eki Arai serves soba with vegetable tempura, plus other Japanese dishes. This is a roadside-station outing, so plan transport from the resort.

Niigata’s rice, seafood and sake remain part of the region’s food character. A mix of a hotel dinner, a mountain lunch and a local noodle stop gives a longer stay variety without making every meal an occasion.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Cafe & Bar Ruri in the hotel’s Lodge building offers a straightforward place for a drink and conversation after skiing. A reserved dinner at Asahi or BECO can be the centre of a quieter evening.

For an evening outside the resort, choose the restaurant and return transport together. Check individual venue programs rather than expecting a fixed nightly party scene.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Choose marked courses and freeriding zones separately; follow the operator’s current openings and terrain rules.
  • 💡Reserve the hotel shuttle if eligible, and match the Joetsumyoko train connection and your hotel building.
  • 💡Compare a base-resort stay with a regional inn or lodge, including the daily journey to Arai.
  • 💡Keep accommodation details in Japanese and a translation tool handy for regional travel and meals.
  • 💡Plan time for Niigata food and an onsen visit alongside the ski days.
