THE REGION

The Mad River Valley cuts through the heart of Vermont's Green Mountains, a narrow corridor where two ski areas—Mad River Glen and Sugarbush—draw devoted followers who argue endlessly about which is better. The valley takes its name from the river that carved it, tumbling north from the ridgeline through Waitsfield, Warren, and the surrounding farmland before joining the Winooski River.

This is Vermont as the postcards promise: white church steeples against mountain backdrops, covered bridges, and farms that have worked the same land for generations. The valley has attracted artists, craftspeople, and back-to-the-landers since the 1960s, creating a community that values authenticity over commercialism, local over corporate, character over convenience.

Mad River Glen itself stands as perhaps the most deliberately unchanged ski area in America. Opened in 1948, it operated as a traditional resort until financial troubles in the 1990s threatened closure. In 1995, the skiers themselves bought the mountain, creating America's only cooperatively owned major ski area. The 2,000+ shareholders who own Mad River Glen approach their mountain with an almost religious devotion, voting to maintain policies that would terrify any corporate board: no snowboarding, minimal grooming, no real estate development.

The valley floor sits at roughly 700 feet elevation, with Mad River Glen's summit reaching 3,637 feet—modest by Western standards but significant for New England. The Green Mountains funnel weather systems through the valley, and the terrain's north-facing aspects hold snow remarkably well. When conditions align, the skiing here rivals anything in the East.

Settlement in the Mad River Valley dates to the late 1700s, with farming and logging driving the economy until skiing arrived. Unlike purpose-built resort towns, Waitsfield and Warren existed long before the lifts, and they maintain that independence—serving skiers, certainly, but not owned by them.

THE LOCAL SCENE

The Mad River Valley has cultivated a counterculture identity for decades, attracting artists, organic farmers, and people fleeing conventional careers. This isn't the manufactured quirkiness of a resort town but genuine alternative culture—the kind of place where the farmer at the market also plays in a band and the server at dinner just finished her MFA.

Waitsfield serves as the valley's commercial center, with a village that includes exactly what a Vermont town should: covered bridge, general store, church steeple, and a surprising number of good restaurants for a community of 1,700 people. Warren, smaller and quieter, anchors the valley's southern end with its own village store and charm.

The food scene punches well above the valley's weight. Hen of the Wood in Waterbury (just north) has earned national acclaim for its hyper-local cuisine and mushroom obsession. Closer to the mountain, Peasant in Waitsfield delivers sophisticated farm-to-table dining. The Common Man in Warren occupies a restored barn with consistently excellent American cuisine. For casual eats, the Mad Taco in Waitsfield serves creative Mexican food, and the Warren Store offers excellent sandwiches and the valley's best people-watching.

Après-ski at Mad River Glen is its own experience. The Basebox at the mountain base serves straightforward food and beer in an atmosphere that hasn't changed much since the 1960s. The vibe is inclusive but unpretentious—you're welcome if you love skiing, regardless of your ability level, but don't expect anything fancy. In town, the Hyde Away Inn hosts live music and serves as a gathering spot. The Big Picture Theater & Cafe in Waitsfield screens films and serves local beer.

Nightlife is quiet by design. The valley attracts people who wake early to ski, not those who stay out late. A few bars serve until closing, but the entertainment here is conversation—sharing stories about the day's runs, debating the merits of the Single Chair, planning tomorrow's lines. This is a community, not a party destination.

GETTING THERE

From the Burlington side, approach the Mad River Valley through Waterbury and Waitsfield, then take Route 17 west to the ski area. Check winter roads and choose your route for the direction you’re arriving from. The seasonal Mad Bus serves parts of the valley, including Sugarbush bases. Confirm the final leg to Mad River Glen. If arriving by train at Waterbury or Montpelier, arrange onward transport before setting off.

WHEN TO GO

Much of the mountain depends on natural snow. The co-op makes snow on selected lower terrain, including the Practice Slope. For a trip built around the Single Chair or a particular expert trail, check the lift and trail report rather than relying on a month alone. Keep a valley activity in reserve for a thin-snow day.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🏔️

Sugarbush ski day

Outdoor

A separate valley ski area for another day on snow. Use that resort’s own ticket, transport and meeting arrangements.

🏔️

Ole’s Cross Country Center

Outdoor

Plan a separate Nordic outing in the valley and check the centre’s grooming report.

🎭

Warren village

Culture

Take a valley outing for the covered bridge and a town meal.

🎭

Cold Hollow Cider Mill

Culture

A separate stop on a trip through the Waterbury area. Check visitor hours for your travel day.

WHERE TO STAY

Compare Warren and Waitsfield for a Mad River Valley stay. The Pitcher Inn in Warren offers guest rooms and suites with farm-to-table dining. West Hill House B&B in Warren offers rooms with private baths and breakfast. In Waitsfield, Mad River Barn combines a boutique inn with a pub and dining room.

For a trip that includes Mad River Glen and Sugarbush, Tucker Hill Lodge identifies both mountains as nearby and offers rooms with private bathrooms and Wi-Fi. Check each property’s location and route to the mountain you plan to ski. Compare the full stay cost and book ahead for your chosen dates.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Choose between the natural-snow expert trails and Practice Slope using the day’s open-trail list.
  • 💡For a valley stay, check the actual route to Mad River Glen before relying on a ski bus.
  • 💡Parties that include snowboarders should plan a separate mountain outing for those riders.
