THE REGION

Mayrhofen sits at the head of the Zillertal valley, one of Tirol's most famous ski valleys, offering access to 142 km of pistes on the Penken and Ahorn mountains. The resort is renowned for the Harakiri — Austria's steepest groomed piste at 78% gradient — and for a vibrant village atmosphere that attracts a young, energetic crowd from across Europe.

Beyond the main ski area, the Zillertal Superskipass opens up 530 km of pistes across the entire valley, including the Hintertux Glacier for year-round skiing. Mayrhofen combines serious terrain with a lively nightlife scene and authentic Tirolean village character — wooden chalets, church spires, and a bustling pedestrian center.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Mayrhofen has a youthful, international energy unique among Tirolean villages. The famous Snowbombing festival — a massive electronic music event held on the mountain — has put it on the global party map. But the village retains its Tirolean soul with traditional wooden architecture, family-run gasthöfe, and a strong farming community in the upper Zillertal.

GETTING THERE

Arriving by rail, change at Jenbach for the Zillertalbahn to Mayrhofen. Choose your lift base before booking a transfer. The Penkenbahn is on the main street and the Ahornbahn is on Ahornstraße.

WHEN TO GO

Pick travel dates from the lift calendar for the mountain you want to ski. Hintertux is a separate glacier outing with its own lift and weather report. For Snowbombing, use the event calendar to plan accommodation.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🏔️

Harakiri on Penken

Outdoor

A demanding groomed run for experienced skiers. Check conditions at the entrance.

🎭

Zillertalbahn

Culture

Ride the valley railway between Jenbach and Mayrhofen. Check special departures separately if you want a steam-train outing.

🧘

Erlebnisbad Mayrhofen

Wellness

The indoor pool and sauna give families a warm option away from the slopes. Check public opening times for your visit.

🎭

Erlebnissennerei Zillertal

Culture

A local dairy outing for a day away from the lifts. Check visitor hours before the trip.

🏔️

Hintertux Glacier

Outdoor

Plan a separate day up the valley. Check the glacier’s open terrain and return transport before leaving Mayrhofen.

WHERE TO STAY

Sport & Spa Hotel Strass is beside the Penkenbahn valley station for mornings on Penken. Hotel Gasthof Brücke offers a central base with winter après, while MANNI pairs a village stay with a rooftop spa. ElisabethHotel suits adults looking for a spa stay. For simpler lodging, Gästehaus Pendl has single rooms and a shared guest kitchen. Confirm the walk or winter bus route from your accommodation to the lift you plan to use.

THE FOOD SCENE

Choose Wirtshaus zum Griena in Dorf Haus for a traditional Tyrolean evening. At Zillertalerhof in town, the kitchen pairs Alpine cooking with Mediterranean and East Asian flavors. Visitors can reserve dinner even when staying elsewhere.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

The ICEBAR at Hotel Strass is beside the Penkenbahn valley station, so you can meet friends for DJ music after coming down from Penken. Brück’n Stadl is another village choice for dancing. Check the event listing for the night you plan to go.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Allow time at a Zillertal ticket window to exchange an eligible Epic Pass and photo ID. The five consecutive days are shared across the participating valley areas.
  • 💡Use the Ahornbahn to return from the family slopes if the long valley descent is beyond your group’s level.
  • 💡Choose the base that suits your day. Penken has Harakiri and the park, while Ahorn has the plateau learning slopes.
