THE REGION

The Upper Arkansas Valley sits at the gateway between the Elk Mountains and Sangre de Cristo Range, blending adventure tourism, outdoor recreation, and frontier heritage. Salida is a vibrant arts town with galleries, breweries, and restaurants along the Arkansas River. The region offers world-class rafting, climbing, mountain biking, and hiking alongside skiing. Natural hot springs dot the landscape. The area celebrates Colorado's outdoor culture while maintaining a bohemian, welcoming vibe — less touristy than resort towns, more genuine and accessible.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Salida is a quirky arts town with excellent farm-to-table restaurants, craft breweries, and a strong local music scene. The town features galleries, yoga studios, and a welcoming LGBTQ+ community. Après-ski centers around Salida — the Sidewinder Saloon at Monarch offers burgers and local beers. Nearby restaurants like Amicas and Absolute Bakery offer exceptional food. The Arkansas River provides world-class rafting, kayaking, and paddling. Hot Springs Spa offers geothermal soaking. Food scene emphasis: Salida's restaurant quality exceeds most mountain towns its size.

GETTING THERE

Approach on US 50 near the top of Monarch Pass, west of Salida. Check Colorado road conditions and closures before leaving town. Staying at Monarch Mountain Lodge or in Salida still requires a trip to the ski area.

WHEN TO GO

Monarch skis on natural snow. Look at open lifts and trails as well as the snow total. Mirkwood and No Name Basin can have different opening windows from runs near the main base. For a warm-weather visit, Salida’s river and arts district offer a different reason to stay.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

WHERE TO STAY

Monarch’s ski area has no overnight accommodation on its property. For a stay nearby, Monarch Mountain Lodge is on US 50 and offers a ski shuttle. Ski Town Condos in Garfield has two-bedroom units with kitchens and requires a drive to the lifts. In Salida, choose Simple Lodge & Hostel for a downtown stay or Salida Inn & Monarch Suites for a roadside room or cottage. Mount Princeton in Nathrop suits a trip that also includes hot springs. Check winter road conditions before leaving for ski days.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Check which lift serves your intended run before crossing the Divide into No Name Basin.
  • 💡Choose a base-lodge meeting time for mixed groups. If you want to ski Mirkwood, allow for the uphill approach.
  • 💡Allow extra time on US 50 when storms pass through the mountains.
