THE REGION

Mount Snow anchors the Deerfield Valley in southern Vermont, a region of rolling Green Mountain foothills, pastoral farmland, and quintessential New England villages. The resort occupies the slopes of Mount Pisgah, rising to 3,586 feet and offering sweeping views of the surrounding Vermont countryside. The Deerfield Valley has been a ski destination since 1954, when Mount Snow first opened, and the resort has grown into one of the largest ski areas in the East with 20 lifts and over 80 trails across three distinct mountain faces. Southern Vermont's character is defined by its covered bridges, white-steepled churches, and a creative community of artists, farmers, and outdoor enthusiasts who give the region its warm, unpretentious personality.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Southern Vermont has a relaxed, artistic soul that sets it apart from the more polished resort towns further north. Wilmington, the closest town, is a charming village along the Deerfield River with independent shops, galleries, and restaurants lining its main street. The region celebrates its agricultural roots through farmers' markets, maple sugar houses, and farm-to-table dining. Dover, the town that encompasses Mount Snow, has a scattering of inns, restaurants, and shops along Route 100 that cater to the ski crowd without feeling commercialized.

GETTING THERE

Mount Snow is in West Dover off Vermont Route 100, north of Wilmington. Choose the main base or Carinthia before navigating to parking. Confirm the base on your rental or lesson booking, particularly if the group is travelling in separate cars.

WHEN TO GO

Choose a midwinter day for the widest choice when all four faces are operating. In early winter and spring, compare the open trails and parks with the terrain you want to ski. A busy holiday weekend is worth booking ahead.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🎭

Wilmington Village Shopping and Dining

Culture

Stroll through Wilmington's charming main street lined with independent boutiques, galleries, antique shops, and locally owned restaurants.

🏔️

Prospect Mountain Nordic

Outdoor

Travel to Woodford for a day at a dedicated cross-country ski centre. Check the trail report and day admission before leaving Dover.

🍽️

Deerfield Valley food and drink

Dining

Plan an evening in Wilmington or West Dover around a restaurant in the village where you are staying.

🏔️

Harriman Reservoir Snowshoeing

Outdoor

Snowshoe along the shores of Harriman Reservoir, a scenic body of water surrounded by national forest south of Mount Snow.

🍽️

Vermont Maple Sugar House Tours

Dining

Visit a local sugar house to see how Vermont's iconic maple syrup is made, with some operations offering tours and tastings in late winter.

WHERE TO STAY

Stay at Grand Summit for slopeside access and a choice of rooms, studios or suites. In West Dover, Gray Ghost pairs breakfast with a stop on the public MOOver route, the Inn at Mount Snow offers a renovated boutique stay, and Mountaineer Inn has a hot tub and parking on Handle Road. Compare inns and rental homes along Route 100 toward Wilmington if you plan to drive.

THE FOOD SCENE

Cuzzins offers sit-down pub food in the Main Base Lodge. In West Dover, TC’s Family Restaurant pairs casual American and Italian dishes with Kelly Clark’s snowboard memorabilia. For a quieter dinner on Route 100, book a table at the 1846 Tavern in a former stagecoach inn.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Cuzzins is the Main Base Lodge gathering place for a drink and pub food after skiing. The Snow Barn is a separate live music venue. Check the event listings before making an evening of it.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Check North Face before heading over for Ripcord. It is rated double-black.
  • 💡Use the Carinthia park map to select a feature size and agree on a meeting point at its base lodge.
  • 💡Stop in Wilmington for breakfast or a village walk on the way to or from West Dover.
