THE REGION

Central Oregon's high desert presents one of the most striking landscape contrasts in the American West—where the dense, wet forests of the Cascade Range give way to the arid ponderosa pine parklands and sagebrush expanses of the interior. Mt. Bachelor rises from this transition zone, a symmetrical volcanic cone that captures Pacific moisture while benefiting from the lighter, drier snow conditions of the east side.

The geological story here is one of recent volcanism—Bachelor is less than 20,000 years old, a young shield volcano that has experienced eruptive activity within the past 10,000 years.

The town of Bend has transformed from a quiet logging community into one of the fastest-growing cities in the Pacific Northwest, bringing world-class restaurants, craft breweries, and an outdoor recreation culture that rivals anywhere in the country.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Bend has cultivated a craft beer culture that rivals any city in the country. More than 30 breweries operate within the city limits. The people of Bend embody an active lifestyle ethos—it's a community where outdoor pursuits define daily life.

GETTING THERE

Redmond is the airport for a Bend-based ski trip. From Bend, take Century Drive to the ski area or check the Cascades East Transit mountain bus. In winter the road ends at West Village. Choose West Village, Sunrise or Skyliner according to your lesson, rentals and first lift.

WHEN TO GO

Summit and backside openings depend on wind, visibility and patrol work. If those areas are the purpose of your trip, compare the lift report with the forecast. In spring, check the scheduled base and lift operations before booking a lesson or choosing parking.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

WHERE TO STAY

Bend is the overnight base for a Mt. Bachelor trip. Downtown puts restaurants nearby, while TownePlace offers suite kitchens and guest laundry. Compare Mt. Bachelor Village condos with Tetherow vacation homes if your group needs more space. Seventh Mountain is on Century Drive along the approach to the ski area. Plan the road journey separately for each ski day.

THE FOOD SCENE

At the mountain, Pine Marten Lodge has Scapolo’s for a Mediterranean-inspired lunch with a view. West Village Lodge has base-level options including Pinnacles for coffee. In Bend, Jackson’s Corner works for brunch or supper, Spork for casual street food, and Ariana for an intimate seasonal dinner.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Rock Bar is an option for food and drinks at the mountain when serving. If the group is heading back to Bend, meet at Deschutes Brewery’s downtown Public House on NW Bond Street for beer and a meal.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Match your parking lot to your first activity. The interlodge shuttle connects base areas during scheduled service.
  • 💡If the Summit chair opens, check the specific terrain and return routes before skiing the backside.
  • 💡Stay in Bend for breweries and the High Desert Museum. Save the full Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway drive for the season when the road beyond West Village is open.
