MOUNT HOOD, OREGON

Mt. Hood Meadows sits on the sunny east side of Oregon's iconic 11,240-foot volcano, offering reliable snow and panoramic views of the Cascade Range. ...

THE REGION

Mt. Hood Meadows sits on the sunny east side of Oregon's iconic 11,240-foot volcano, offering reliable snow and panoramic views of the Cascade Range. Government Camp serves as the gateway to multiple ski areas and mountain culture. The region blends accessible mountain recreation with genuine outdoor community. Meadows maintains a straightforward, no-frills approach — locals' mountain with serious terrain and friendly vibes. The area celebrates simplicity and authentic alpine experience.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Government Camp offers classic mountain-town atmosphere with local breweries, casual restaurants, and genuine mountain culture. Nearby Hood River provides upscale dining, craft beverages, and windsurfing culture. The region emphasizes outdoor lifestyle — mountain biking in summer, skiing in winter, and outdoor community year-round. Après-ski centers on rustic lodges and Government Camp's local bars. The area's Cascade culture celebrates nature and authentic recreation without pretense.

GETTING THERE

Approach Meadows on Oregon Highway 35 via US 26 from Government Camp or the Hood River side from I-84. Check winter road conditions, the resort parking report and the Sno-Park permit requirements. Meadows and Timberline have separate access roads. If a lesson or meal is booked, verify which resort and base it uses.

WHEN TO GO

For the upper mountain and Heather Canyon, check the lift and gated-access report for your day. Wind and patrol work can change the day’s choices even after fresh snowfall. Spring schedules, summer hiking access and road conditions are separate planning questions.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🏔️

Mount Hood Summer Hiking

Outdoor

Iconic Timberline Trail circumnavigates the volcano with alpine meadows, glaciers, and panoramic views

🏔️

Columbia River Gorge Recreation

Outdoor

World-class windsurfing, hiking, and scenic drives through dramatic canyon landscape

🎭

Hood River Valley Wine & Orchards

Culture

Nearby orchards, farms, and wine tasting rooms celebrating the valley's agricultural heritage

WHERE TO STAY

Government Camp puts you between ski outings, with Collins Lake chalets for groups, Huckleberry Inn for rooms and a restaurant, and Best Western Mt. Hood Inn for a hotel stay. Welches offers resort rooms and suites farther west. Timberline Lodge sits at its own ski area, so a Meadows day starts with a road trip. Check winter highway conditions from whichever base you choose.
