THE REGION

Nevados de Chillan occupies the central Chilean Andes, positioned on the flanks of three active volcanoes in the Nuble region. The landscape is dramatically Alpine—forests give way to high-altitude terrain where volcanic geology shapes the skiing experience. Unlike the Norte Chico deserts to the north or the temperate southern lakes region, this central zone sits at the convergence of climate patterns that create abundant snowfall.

The region blends Andean wilderness with nearby small towns. Las Trancas, the gateway village, remains authentically Chilean without tourist overloading. Hot springs dot the area—volcanic activity heats water in natural pools scattered across the landscape. The combining of skiing and thermal bathing in the same day is a unique regional feature.

THE LOCAL SCENE

The Nuble region represents authentic rural Chile, where agricultural traditions remain strong alongside emerging tourism. Las Trancas is a small, genuine mountain community rather than a resort town.

Food culture reflects Chilean traditions with fresh ingredients and hearty mountain fare. Curanto, a traditional Andean stew made with seafood and local vegetables, appears on many menus. The region produces excellent wines from nearby vineyards. Natural hot springs are integral to local life and culture—soaking is considered both recreation and wellness practice.

Après-ski is low-key and centered around resort amenities and the thermal pools. The nearby towns have basic restaurants and services but nothing approaching a nightlife scene. The appeal is mountain tranquility rather than commercial entertainment.

GETTING THERE

From Chillán, follow Ruta N-55 through Valle Las Trancas to the ski area or arrange a transfer through your accommodation. Drivers should check the day’s mountain-road notice because police may control uphill and downhill traffic. Match parking at Plaza Tata, Willy or Otto to your planned activity.

WHEN TO GO

For a Southern Hemisphere winter ski trip, check each part of Las Tres Marías on the mountain report. A thermal-pool visit can be a separate plan when upper lifts are closed. Ask which pools and admission your hotel booking covers.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🧘

Thermal pools

Wellness

Choose a hotel or day-visit pool and check admission. Different properties have their own facilities.

🏔️

Las Tres Marías

Outdoor

Plan the long descent only when the marked sections and the connecting lifts are open.

🏔️

Valle Las Trancas

Outdoor

Use the village as a base for mountain scenery, forest outings and access up to the ski area. Ask locally about open walking routes.

WHERE TO STAY

Hotel Nevados and Hotel Termas Chillán are separate hotels in the mountain area. Compare Nevados for its thermal pools and Termas Chillán for its rooms and Alunco spa, and check the inclusions on your reservation. In Las Trancas, Cabañas Los Nevados has detached cabins for groups who cook, while Hostal Los Ñirres has private and shared rooms. From either valley stay, arrange the journey up to the lifts and check winter road controls.
