THE REGION

Northstar California Resort is nestled in the pine forests between Truckee and the north shore of Lake Tahoe at a base elevation of 6,330 feet. The resort occupies a sheltered position on the north side of Lookout Mountain, providing excellent tree skiing and protection from harsh winds that can pummel other Tahoe resorts. Developed in the 1970s, Northstar has evolved into one of Tahoe's most polished resort experiences, anchored by a pedestrian village and the luxury Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe.

The terrain covers 3,170 acres with a good mix of groomed intermediate runs, tree skiing, and the Lookout Mountain advanced terrain. Northstar is particularly renowned for its immaculate grooming -- wide, smooth corduroy runs draw intermediate cruisers from across the region. The backside offers more adventurous terrain with steeps and glades. The resort also features an excellent terrain park progression from beginner to advanced. While it may lack the extreme terrain of Kirkwood or the sheer size of Heavenly, Northstar delivers a premium, well-rounded ski experience in a beautiful forest setting.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Northstar's village has a polished, upscale feel with high-end shops, restaurants, and an outdoor ice rink surrounded by fire pits. It's family-friendly and well-designed but purpose-built, lacking the organic character of a real town. That's where Truckee comes in: just six miles north, this historic railroad town is one of the best mountain towns in California. Truckee's downtown has an authentic Old West feel with excellent independent restaurants, craft breweries, and local boutiques. Many regulars ski Northstar but stay in Truckee for the town experience, dining scene, and more affordable lodging.

GETTING THERE

Northstar is off Highway 267 between Truckee and Kings Beach. TART’s scheduled Highway 267 bus connects Truckee with the Northstar Village stop. TART Connect is a separate on-demand service with service zones. If driving, check the resort parking plan for your date and allow time for the shuttle from Castle Peak when that lot is in use.

WHEN TO GO

On a busy winter morning, plan around parking or bus arrival, rental fitting and the opening of the sector you want. For a spring trip, check the lift lineup before booking for the Backside or Lookout Mountain.

WHERE TO STAY

Choose the Ritz-Carlton for a mid-mountain stay or Northstar Lodge for residences with Highlands Gondola access. Northstar Village Condos are a separate resort-booked collection, so look up the building before planning your walk or shuttle to the lifts. Truckee offers groceries and restaurants for a town-based stay. Cedar Glen Lodge offers cottages and suites on the North Lake Tahoe side. From either off-mountain base, plan the road trip to Northstar around winter conditions.

THE FOOD SCENE

Choose Rubicon for pizza in the Village at Northstar. Manzanita is part of the mid-mountain Ritz-Carlton, so plan the trip up to the hotel separately from a village dinner. If you are returning to Truckee, Drunken Monkey Sushi on Brockway Road is an option for sushi and shared plates.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Rink Bar sits beside the Village skate rink and is easy to reach on foot. Meet there for a drink, then head to Rubicon to share pizzas. If you are already at the Ritz-Carlton, the hotel’s Living Room Lodge is a separate mid-mountain option.
