THE REGION

Okemo Mountain Resort dominates the skyline above Ludlow, a classic Vermont village nestled in the Black River valley of south-central Vermont. The resort has grown from a small community ski hill into one of the premier family resorts in the Northeast, known for its impeccable grooming, extensive snowmaking, and welcoming atmosphere. The surrounding Okemo Valley region embraces the best of Vermont's rural character: covered bridges span the Black River and its tributaries, white-steepled churches punctuate village greens, and country stores stock local maple syrup, cheddar cheese, and craft provisions. The Green Mountain National Forest wraps around the region, providing a wilderness backdrop that extends well beyond the resort boundaries.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Ludlow is a genuine Vermont village that has adapted gracefully to its role as a ski town without losing its small-town authenticity. The downtown is anchored by independent shops, restaurants, and the historic Ludlow town green. The local community maintains a strong agricultural and artisan tradition, with nearby farms, sugar houses, and craft producers contributing to a vibrant local economy. The Vermont Country Store in nearby Weston is a beloved institution, and the Weston Playhouse is one of the oldest professional theaters in Vermont. The overall vibe is family-friendly, welcoming, and unmistakably Vermont.

GETTING THERE

Drive to Ludlow, Vermont, then follow directions to Clock Tower or Jackson Gore. Clock Tower has parking within walking distance of the slopes. At Jackson Gore, the inn circle is for drop-off and the lots sit farther from the lifts. Check the resort’s parking map and seasonal shuttle routes before setting out.

WHEN TO GO

Midwinter suits visitors looking for a full ski day. Weekends and school holidays draw families, so book lessons and rentals ahead for those dates. For spring trips, use the operating calendar and daily trail report to decide what is open.

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

WHERE TO STAY

Choose Jackson Gore Village for slopeside rooms and kitchen suites at Jackson Gore, or Mountain Lodge for condos beside Clock Tower. Match your lodging base to the lift or lesson you plan to use. The Governor’s Inn offers a Main Street Ludlow stay near shops and restaurants. In Proctorsville, The Pointe has an indoor pool and suites for families who plan to drive to the mountain.

THE FOOD SCENE

Coleman Brook Tavern serves casual American food at the Jackson Gore base. In downtown Ludlow, reserve ahead for The Downtown Grocery’s small dining room. Mojo Cafe on Main Street is a counter-service alternative for tacos, burritos or a po-boy.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Finish a Clock Tower ski day at The Bull Bar & Restaurant in the base lodge. At Jackson Gore, Coleman Brook Tavern offers a sit-down meal. For a pint away from the lifts, head to The Killarney, a family-run Irish pub in Ludlow.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Check the grooming report before choosing a morning cruiser.
  • 💡Pick a meeting place at your starting base before your group splits up.
  • 💡For a non-ski outing, head to Weston for the Vermont Country Store.
