THE REGION

Orelle is the quiet backdoor into Les 3 Vallées, sitting at just 900m in the Maurienne Valley on the opposite side of the mountain from the famous Belleville and Allues valleys. The 3 Vallées Express gondola — one of the longest in the world — climbs over 1,800 vertical meters to connect this tiny hamlet to Val Thorens and the entire ski domain. Orelle itself is a handful of traditional stone farmhouses surrounded by forests, offering none of the resort infrastructure but all of the ski access at a fraction of the cost and crowds.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Orelle is authentic rural Maurienne — a working agricultural hamlet where ski tourism is secondary to farming traditions. The Maurienne Valley has its own distinct Savoyard character, historically connected more to Italy via the Mont Cenis and Fréjus passes than to the Tarentaise resorts. Opinel knives are manufactured in nearby Albiez.

GETTING THERE

Approach through the Maurienne valley on the A43. Head to Francoz for the Orelle gondola, even if your accommodation is in another hamlet. From Italy, check the Fréjus tunnel before choosing a driving route. Book any onward transfer from the railway station separately.

WHEN TO GO

The gondola operates from mid-December to mid-April, aligned with the Les 3 Vallées season. January and February offer the most reliable conditions. The Maurienne Valley receives less snowfall than the Tarentaise side, but the gondola quickly reaches high-altitude skiing above 2,300m. Weekday visits are especially uncrowded.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

Outdoor

WHERE TO STAY

The gondola starts in Francoz. HOB Orelle offers dorm beds and private rooms there, and Gîte Rosaël is a larger house near the departure. In the Hameau des Eaux, compare apartment layouts and winter shuttle arrangements for the ride to Francoz. La Maison du Bonheur in Le Chef-Lieu suits self-catering families who can arrange the onward trip.

THE FOOD SCENE

Chalet Chinal-Donat at Plan Bouchet serves Savoyard specialties and pastries, with access from the pistes or the gondola. Down in Orelle, HOB welcomes visitors for a village meal. The Hameau des Eaux residence also offers meal plans for its guests.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

In Francoz, Bar des 4 Vallées serves snacks and aperitifs on the gondola square. HOB on Route de Francoz is an option for a longer meal and a drink after the descent. If you linger on the mountain, check the last downhill connection first.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Start at Francoz and check the last lift back from the sector you intend to ski.
  • 💡Choose Plan Bouchet for a local day or extend toward Val Thorens when the higher connections are open.
  • 💡For a valley afternoon, visit the Opinel museum in central Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne.
