THE REGION

Paoli Peaks is nestled in the rolling hills of Orange County in southern Indiana, an area that defies the state's flat-farmland stereotype. The terrain here was shaped by ancient geological forces, creating a landscape of forested hills, limestone caves, and winding creeks. Nearby French Lick is a historic resort town that adds unexpected elegance to this rural region. Paoli Peaks serves as the primary ski area for Indianapolis and Louisville residents.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Paoli is a quintessential small Indiana town with a courthouse square, local shops, and a slow pace. Nearby French Lick and West Baden are famous for their grand early-1900s resort hotels, originally built around mineral springs. The area has a unique mix of rural simplicity and faded Gilded Age glamour.

GETTING THERE

From Indianapolis, follow State Road 37 south to Paoli. From Louisville, take I-64 west to US 150 west. Continue on US 150 west from the courthouse square and turn at the resort sign. Skiers and snowboarders park at the main lodge at the top of the slopes. Arctic Blast tubing has its own entrance and parking on County Road 25 South.

WHEN TO GO

Plan a winter visit around the snow report. Cold spells support snowmaking, while milder weather can change the terrain and hours. If you are driving for an evening session or tubing, check that activity’s schedule before departure.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🧘

French Lick Resort & Casino

Wellness

Historic grand hotel with casino, spa, and golf in the restored French Lick Springs Hotel, 15 minutes from the slopes.

🎭

West Baden Springs Hotel

Culture

An architectural marvel with a massive domed atrium, beautifully restored and open for tours and overnight stays.

🏔️

Hoosier National Forest

Outdoor

Over 200,000 acres of forested hills with hiking trails, scenic drives, and winter solitude in southern Indiana.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Bluespring Caverns

Family

The public underground river boat tour operates from spring into autumn. Check the season and water conditions before driving to Bedford.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

French Lick Scenic Railway

Family

A heritage train ride through the Hoosier National Forest with seasonal excursions departing from French Lick.

WHERE TO STAY

For a self-contained stay near Paoli, compare the cabin layouts at Wilstem on US 150. French Lick Springs Hotel has bowling and pools, while West Baden Springs pairs its domed atrium with dining and a spa. Best Western Plus French Lick is a simpler hotel option. Plan to drive to Paoli Peaks from each.

THE FOOD SCENE

For lunch on the hill, Peaks Pizzeria & Grill is in the main ski lodge. Porky’s BBQ is a casual stop in Paoli. Staying near French Lick opens up The German Cafe on South Maple Street and Sinclair’s Restaurant in West Baden.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Meet at the main ski lodge after the last run, or make dinner the evening outing. Porky’s keeps the trip in Paoli, while French Lick and West Baden offer a choice of town and hotel restaurants.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Choose the main lodge entrance for skiing and the Arctic Blast entrance for tubing.
  • 💡Check conditions before leaving Indianapolis or Louisville, especially for an evening visit.
  • 💡French Lick and West Baden make a nearby base for a weekend that combines the slopes with a hotel dinner.
