SNOWY MOUNTAINS

Perisher is the largest ski resort in the Southern Hemisphere, encompassing four interconnected areas — Perisher Valley, Blue Cow, Smiggin Holes, and ...

THE REGION

Perisher is the largest ski resort in the Southern Hemisphere, encompassing four interconnected areas — Perisher Valley, Blue Cow, Smiggin Holes, and Guthega — within Kosciuszko National Park. The resort boasts over 1,245 hectares of skiable terrain, 47 lifts, and 121 runs spread across the vast Snowy Mountains landscape. The terrain ranges from gentle beginner slopes to challenging expert runs and natural terrain features.

Located within Australia's stunning Snowy Mountains region, Perisher combines world-class skiing infrastructure with the unique experience of skiing within a national park. The resort's sheer size means there's always uncrowded terrain to discover, and the Skitube underground railway provides a unique mountain access experience, transporting skiers from Bullocks Flat directly to Perisher Valley and Blue Cow through a tunnel beneath the mountains.

THE LOCAL SCENE

The Snowy Mountains have a storied place in Australian culture, famously immortalized in Banjo Paterson's poem 'The Man from Snowy River.' The region's history includes the ambitious Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme, built by post-war immigrants who created the multicultural community that still defines the area.

Jindabyne, the gateway town, has a laid-back Australian country-town character with a lakeside setting. The ski culture here is enthusiastic and unpretentious, with a strong emphasis on having fun and being outdoors. Australians are famously passionate about their ski season despite the modest alpine terrain.

GETTING THERE

Jindabyne is the gateway to Perisher. Drive up Kosciuszko Road to Perisher Valley, or take Alpine Way to Bullocks Flat and ride Skitube. Change trains at Perisher Valley for Blue Cow, or take the shuttle to Smiggin Holes. Check winter road conditions and chain requirements for your route. Two-wheel-drive vehicles must carry chains on designated park roads during the winter restriction period.

WHEN TO GO

July and August are the core Australian winter months. Early-season coverage and spring closing dates depend on conditions, and the four sectors may operate differently. Perisher has looked ahead to winter 2027 without publishing exact dates in its season wrap.

WHERE TO STAY

For an on-snow stay in Perisher Valley, compare the Sundeck Hotel above the lifts with Matterhorn Lodge’s shared spaces and included meals. Marritz has hotel rooms, larger apartments and an indoor pool. At Smiggin Holes, the Smiggins Chalet Apartments offer kitchenettes near the lifts. Staying in Jindabyne gives you a wider choice of rentals, but adds a daily road journey or a drive to the Skitube at Bullocks Flat.

THE FOOD SCENE

At Perisher, the Dining Room at the Man From Snowy River Hotel serves regional produce with Front Valley views. Snow Gums at the Perisher Valley Hotel pairs a restaurant with a fireside cocktail bar. In Jindabyne, the Banjo Paterson Inn offers pub dishes at Clancy’s and pizzas and burgers at The Overflow.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Meet at Snow Gums for a fireside drink in Perisher Valley, or head down to the Banjo Paterson Inn if you are staying in Jindabyne. Arrange your road or rail return before settling in.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Match the meeting place to the sector. First-timers often start at Smiggin Holes.
  • 💡Plan the transfer from Jindabyne to Bullocks Flat separately from the Skitube portion.
  • 💡Before exploring Blue Cow or Guthega, check the return lift or train for your group.
