Rusutsu village is a small farming community surrounded by volcanic peaks. The area is known for its agricultural products, particularly potatoes, melons, and dairy. The resort itself is the main attraction, creating a contained destination experience distinct from the town-based atmosphere of Niseko.
Hokkaido has its own distinct culture within Japan, influenced by the indigenous Ainu people and the island's frontier history. The food reflects this — seafood from the surrounding seas, rich dairy products, and Hokkaido-style ramen with miso broth are regional specialties.
From New Chitose Airport, reserve the paid Bigruns transfer to the resort in advance. Travelers already staying in Sapporo can check the separate city shuttle. Confirm the pickup point and service dates before booking connecting travel.
Midwinter is the usual choice for cold-snow skiing. March brings more daylight for exploring the linked mountains. Early and late in the season, check the operating lifts before choosing a base or planning a day on Mt. Isola.
The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:
Indoor hot springs and wave pool at the Rusutsu Resort Hotel for all-weather relaxation
Guided snowmobile adventures through Hokkaido's powder-covered forests and fields
The resort pairs its amusement park with summer stays and camping. Plan this as a green-season outing.
Sample the island's famous miso ramen and other regional varieties at resort restaurants
Experience traditional dog sled tours through Hokkaido's snow-covered landscapes
Ski under the lights and enjoy clear Hokkaido night skies far from city light pollution
Rusutsu Resort Hotel & Convention has direct ski access and an indoor pool. The Westin offers maisonette suites and a monorail connection toward West Mountain. The Vale has condominium-style units and ski lockers. Groups can also compare the resort’s detached log houses, which use the hotel restaurants and baths. Pension Clydesdale offers a smaller base with pickup arranged through the host. Check your booking for the meals, lift tickets and activities it includes.
At the resort hotel, Kakashi offers an izakaya meal built around regional seafood. Oktoberfest in the North Wing is the buffet choice for a group with different appetites.
For a relaxed evening at the base, linger over shared plates at Kakashi or gather the family at Oktoberfest. Check the hotel’s dining schedule when choosing your night.
