THE REGION

Sierra-at-Tahoe is on the Highway 50 side of the Sierra Nevada. Travellers from Sacramento approach through the American River corridor, while visitors staying in South Lake Tahoe cross Echo Summit in the other direction. The 2021 Caldor Fire changed forest cover and left variable surfaces in parts of the ski area.

THE LOCAL SCENE

The summit smokehouse and ski-only West Bowl grill are part of a day on the mountain. South Lake Tahoe gives a different view of the area from the waterfront at Ski Run Marina, with town breakfast stops such as Heidi’s before the next drive up.

GETTING THERE

Reno-Tahoe and Sacramento are the principal airports. Highway 50 serves the final approach, with Echo Summit between the mountain and South Lake Tahoe. Check Caltrans chain controls and closures before setting out. The resort does not run a shuttle from downtown South Lake Tahoe; book a third-party transfer separately if needed. For 2026–27, check the resort’s parking reservation calendar before driving on weekends or holidays.

WHEN TO GO

Midwinter storms can refresh the slopes while disrupting Highway 50 and lift operations. Spring brings longer afternoons when coverage allows. Check the open-trail report and road conditions for your dates, and reserve parking for applicable weekend or holiday mornings.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🏔️

Lake Tahoe Beach

Outdoor

Stunning alpine lake with beaches accessible even in winter for walks and photos

🎭

Casino District

Culture

Shows and gaming are on the Nevada side of South Lake Tahoe, a separate Highway 50 trip from the ski area.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Heavenly Village Gondola

Family

Scenic gondola ride and observation deck with lake views, plus shopping and dining

🏔️

Cross-Country Skiing

Outdoor

Multiple nordic centers including Camp Richardson offer groomed trails

🏔️

Emerald Bay State Park

Outdoor

Check state park access and highway conditions before a winter visit. Snow can restrict viewpoints and trails.

🏔️

Tahoe Rim Trail

Outdoor

166-mile trail circling the lake, with winter-accessible sections for snowshoeing

WHERE TO STAY

Stay in South Lake Tahoe for lakeside evenings and town restaurants, then plan the ski-day drive over Echo Summit according to weather and road controls. Desolation Hotel has a saltwater pool and Maggie’s Restaurant, while The Landing pairs a lakeshore setting with a spa. Tahoe Lakeshore Lodge offers rooms and condos with full kitchens in the condos. For other vacation rentals, compare the exact address, minimum stay and parking arrangements before booking.

THE FOOD SCENE

Spend lunch where you are skiing. Grandview Express serves the summit smokehouse; the ski-only Baja Grill is at the bottom of West Bowl. At the base, The Pub has burgers and pizza on Level 3 of the Main Lodge. In South Lake Tahoe, Heidi’s is a breakfast stop and Riva Grill puts dinner on the water at Ski Run Marina.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Meet at The Pub in the Main Lodge for a drink before the group leaves Sierra. If staying in South Lake Tahoe, Riva Grill at Ski Run Marina provides a separate lakefront dinner outing. Allow for the Highway 50 drive between them.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Plan an easier summit lap on Sugar n’ Spice or meet at 360° Smokehouse BBQ before coming back down.
  • 💡Check patrol’s gate status before considering Huckleberry Canyon. It is expert backcountry, with real avalanche and rescue considerations.
  • 💡Be alert for stumps, uneven surfaces and shallow coverage in terrain affected by the Caldor Fire. Follow posted closures.
  • 💡Secure any required parking reservation before leaving town. Early arrival alone does not reserve a space.
