ALLEGHENY HIGHLANDS

THE REGION

The Allegheny Highlands of eastern West Virginia represent one of the most surprising ski destinations on the East Coast. Here, in the "Mountain State," the Appalachian plateau rises to nearly 5,000 feet—higher than many New England ski areas—creating a pocket of genuine winter in a region most associate with warmer climates.

Snowshoe sits atop Cheat Mountain, its village perched at the summit rather than the base—a unique design that puts lodging, dining, and shopping at 4,848 feet with ski trails dropping away on multiple sides. This top-down layout means you're always skiing down to the lifts rather than riding up to the village, creating an unusually pedestrian-friendly experience at the end of the day.

The surrounding Pocahontas County is extraordinarily rural, with more national forest land than permanent residents. The region's isolation preserved vast tracts of wilderness that now form the Monongahela National Forest—nearly a million acres of mountains, streams, and recovering old-growth forest. The Cass Scenic Railroad, remnant of the logging era, still runs steam trains through these mountains.

West Virginia's ski culture differs from New England or the West. The majority of visitors come from the Southeast—Washington DC, Virginia, the Carolinas—for whom Snowshoe represents the closest thing to real mountain skiing. Weekend crowds can be substantial, but the vibe is more relaxed than northeastern resorts. People are genuinely friendly, prices are reasonable, and there's an underdog pride in this ski area that punches above its geographic weight class.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Snowshoe's culture is distinctly Appalachian at its core—friendly, unpretentious, and proud of making something exceptional in an unlikely place. The staff often includes locals who grew up in these mountains, and their knowledge of the region adds depth to the experience. The resort attracts a diverse crowd: DC families, Virginia college students, Carolinians on their annual ski trip, and a devoted local contingent who consider this their home mountain. There's genuine Southern hospitality here, mixed with mountain independence. The isolation breeds community—after a few days, you'll recognize faces and start making friends.

GETTING THERE

Approach the mountain by road through the West Virginia highlands and check winter conditions before the final climb. Download directions in advance because cell coverage varies. The resort shuttle connects the mountaintop village, Silver Creek and other resort stops. For off-mountain journeys, check Mountain Transit Authority service or arrange a Greenbrier Valley Airport transfer separately.

WHEN TO GO

January and February offer the most reliable conditions, with cold temperatures at elevation supporting snowmaking and often bringing natural snowfall. March can be excellent for spring skiing—warmer temperatures, longer days, and often good snow preservation at this elevation. Holiday periods (Christmas, MLK weekend, Presidents' Day) bring substantial crowds from the DC/Virginia corridor; target midweek or off-peak weekends for shorter lift lines. The Christmas season is particularly popular with families and can be genuinely magical in the mountaintop village.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

WHERE TO STAY

For Ballhooter access, choose between Rimfire Lodge’s shared hot tubs, the heated pool and larger condos at Allegheny Springs, and Mountain Lodge’s door onto Upper Ballhooter. Corduroy Inn & Lodge is beside Powder Monkey, near Western Territory. Silver Creek is a separate ski area. Check the building and return transport when comparing a rental there with a mountaintop village stay.

THE FOOD SCENE

Choose Foxfire Grille for a village meal or reserve 10 Prime at Soaring Eagle for steaks and seafood. The Pizza Slice is across from Western Express at Corduroy Inn, where you can take out pizza or eat at Tuque’s next door.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Pick Old Spruce Tavern for a mountaintop village stop. If the group finishes on the Western Territory side, Tuque’s Bar and Grill is at the Corduroy Inn.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Head to Cupp Run or Shay’s Revenge for Western Territory steeps. For intermediate cruising start with Gandy Dancer or Skipjack.
  • 💡Check Silver Creek’s opening and night-skiing schedule before riding the shuttle over.
  • 💡Green Bank Observatory is a separate day trip. Check tour availability before driving.
