THE REGION

Sölden is a powerhouse ski resort in the Ötztal valley, offering 144 km of pistes from village level (1,350 m) up to 3,340 m across two glaciers — the Rettenbach and Tiefenbach. As the traditional opening venue for the FIS Alpine World Cup each October, Sölden holds a special place in ski racing culture. Its glacier terrain ensures an exceptionally long season.

Sölden also gained pop culture fame as the filming location for the James Bond film 'Spectre' (2015), with the ice Q restaurant at 3,048 m appearing in the movie. The resort combines massive vertical, glacier skiing, and a vibrant village with one of Tirol's best nightlife scenes — drawing an international crowd that skis hard and parties harder.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Sölden has a more modern, international feel than traditional Tirolean villages. The Ötztal valley is home to Ötzi the Iceman (discovered nearby in 1991), connecting the area to 5,000 years of alpine history. The James Bond 007 Elements installation at the summit is a unique cultural attraction. Tirolean traditions — from Schuhplattler dancing to farmhouse hospitality — remain strong in the side valleys.

GETTING THERE

Travel by train to Ötztal-Bahnhof at the valley entrance, then continue by bus to Sölden. From Innsbruck Airport, plan the airport connection separately or arrange a transfer. Drivers approach via the Inntal and Ötztal valley road.

WHEN TO GO

The glacier often offers the earliest turns, before the rest of the linked area opens. Check the operating calendar and open runs for autumn or spring visits. The autumn World Cup weekend brings a different atmosphere from a regular ski day.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

WHERE TO STAY

For a short walk to a gondola, choose Glanz & Glory by Giggijoch or Hotel Grauer Bär by Gaislachkogl. Das Central has a hotel shuttle to both valley stations, and Bergland combines rooms with half-board dining and a spa. Riders In Hotel is a town option near the ski bus. If comparing another Ötztal village, plan both the morning trip and the return after skiing.

THE FOOD SCENE

Choose ice Q for architecture and high-altitude views, or Gampe Thaya on piste 11 for Ötztal cooking and farm-made cheese. Above town, s’Pfandl offers a broad choice for groups with different dietary needs.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Eugen’s Obstlerhütte is a lively on-slope stop on pistes 21/22. Plan your return before settling in. The hut is also accessible on foot or by taxi.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Book lunch at ice Q for the James Bond experience — glacier views from a glass-walled gourmet restaurant at 3,048 m
  • 💡Visit 007 Elements early or late to avoid peak crowds — the immersive Bond experience is worth the time
  • 💡Drive to Aqua Dome in Längenfeld for a post-ski thermal bath — the floating outdoor pools at night are magical
