THE REGION

Big Cottonwood Canyon cuts a gentler path into the Wasatch Range. The canyon's glacially carved profile creates a softer landscape where streams meander through willows and moose browse at dawn. What saved Big Cottonwood from intensive development was water—the canyon's streams feed Salt Lake City's drinking supply, creating strict watershed protections.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Big Cottonwood Canyon is a protected watershed. Solitude Village concentrates its lodges and dining in one walkable cluster, while Silver Fork Lodge offers a separate stop down the canyon.

GETTING THERE

From Salt Lake City, plan the trip to Big Cottonwood Canyon separately from the winter ski bus or drive up to Solitude. Check traction requirements and the current UTA timetable. For 2026/27, Moonbeam requires morning parking reservations on designated Fridays, weekends and holidays during the main season, including for qualifying carpools.

WHEN TO GO

Season typically runs early November through late April. January and February deliver consistent storms and deep powder.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🏔️

Silver Lake Boardwalk

Outdoor

Wheelchair-accessible boardwalk around a pristine alpine lake.

🏔️

Lake Blanche Trail

Outdoor

A mountain hike in snow-free conditions. Winter travel requires a separate avalanche-aware plan.

🏔️

Nordic Skiing

Outdoor

Twenty kilometers of groomed Nordic trails.

🏔️

Backcountry Gates

Outdoor

Beyond the resort boundary, avalanche control and ski patrol coverage end. Treat any exit as a separate backcountry trip.

🏔️

Honeycomb Canyon

Outdoor

Advanced terrain. Use open resort gates and check the grooming report for Woodlawn.

🍽️

Yurt Dining

Dining

Reserve a winter dinner and meet the guide in Solitude Village for the snowshoe walk.

WHERE TO STAY

The Inn at Solitude offers ski-in/ski-out hotel lodging and a spa. Eagle Springs Lodge East has village condos with kitchens within walking distance of the lifts. For a private canyon rental, check the address against the ski area you plan to use. If staying in Cottonwood Heights or Salt Lake City, weigh the daily canyon journey against the restaurants and activities near your lodging.

THE FOOD SCENE

Stop at Roundhouse for Himalayan-inspired lunch on the mountain. Honeycomb Grill offers slopeside dining, and St. Bernard’s is at the Inn. For a special winter evening, reserve The Yurt’s guided snowshoe dinner.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Meet at The Thirsty Squirrel for village après, or choose Silver Fork Lodge for a meal farther down Big Cottonwood Canyon. Check the last bus before settling in.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Check Honeycomb Canyon gate status and the grooming report before heading for Woodlawn.
  • 💡Confirm SolBright connector status, both ski areas’ hours and your ticket coverage before crossing.
  • 💡For an evening plan, The Thirsty Squirrel is in the village and The Yurt is a reserved snowshoe dinner.
