UPPER ENGADIN & THE BERNINA ALPS

THE REGION

The Upper Engadin is a high valley of lakes, Romansh place names and historic winter resorts. St. Moritz hosted the Winter Olympics twice. The Cresta Run keeps one strand of that sporting tradition alive, alongside the modern ski sectors of Corviglia, Corvatsch, Diavolezza and Lagalb. Local transit links the sectors. Check which journeys your lift ticket covers.

THE LOCAL SCENE

St. Moritz operates on its own social register—old money, aristocratic families, and the quietly wealthy who have been coming for generations. The atmosphere differs from flashier resorts: less bottle-service ostentation, more discreet privilege. The dress code tends toward understated elegance rather than logos and labels.

The Romansh heritage adds distinctive character. Traditional architecture features sgraffito—decorative plasterwork scratched to reveal underlying layers—that adorns many buildings with geometric and figurative designs. The Engadin Museum in St. Moritz chronicles this unique cultural heritage, including traditional interiors and artifacts.

The frozen lake serves as social center during peak winter months. Horse-drawn carriages cross the ice to reach the polo fields. The legendary Muottas Muragl funicular climbs for panoramic views across the lake chain and surrounding peaks. Cross-country skiing on the extensive trail network provides an alternative for days away from the lifts.

Food and drink reflect the cultural crossroads. Italian influence flows north through the Bernina Pass, bringing excellent pasta and espresso. German Swiss precision meets Romansh tradition in the local cuisine. The Engadin nut tart—caramelized walnuts in buttery pastry—originated here and remains a regional specialty.

After skiing, the grand hotels provide the social architecture. The lobby of the Badrutt's Palace, the bar of the Kulm, the spa of the Kempinski—these serve as gathering places for the global elite who winter here. Yet the scene remains surprisingly accessible; the famous spaces welcome visitors for a drink, a coffee, or simply a look at how the other half winters.

GETTING THERE

From Zürich, connect to the Rhaetian Railway for the Upper Engadin. Check the timetable for Albula line diversions. From October 29 to November 13, 2026, works affect Thusis–Preda and the region advises the Prättigau/Vereina route. By car, check conditions on the Julier Pass or use the Vereina car train. The Albula road pass closes for winter. From Italy, Tirano connects by rail over the Bernina route.

WHEN TO GO

St. Moritz's exceptional sunshine makes timing less critical than at many resorts. The high altitude (1,800m base) ensures reliable snow conditions throughout the season, while the famous Engadin sun provides pleasant skiing even in January.

Late January through February delivers the social season's peak. The frozen lake events—polo, cricket, White Turf horse racing—concentrate in these months. The atmosphere reaches its most glamorous during these weeks, with the grand hotels fully booked and the restaurants buzzing.

March offers arguably the best pure skiing conditions: longer days, warmer temperatures, and typically excellent snow coverage. The sun angle improves, and the famous Engadin light reaches its peak quality. The social intensity diminishes slightly as the season winds toward conclusion.

Early December and late November often feature excellent early-season conditions, thanks to both altitude and significant snowmaking investment. The season typically extends into late April, with Diavolezza often holding snow into May.

Christmas and New Year bring maximum glamour and maximum crowds. The famous Palace Hotel lobby becomes a scene worthy of a film set, and restaurant reservations require advance planning. For those seeking the full St. Moritz social experience, this is the time; for those prioritizing skiing over scene, January or March offer better value.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🏔️

Muottas Muragl Panorama

Outdoor

🧘

Ovaverva Spa & Pool

Wellness

Public indoor pool and spa in St. Moritz, with a bistro and facilities for families.

🎭

Segantini Museum

Culture

Dedicated to Giovanni Segantini, the painter who captured the Engadin light in symbolist masterpieces. The dome-shaped building echoes his famous Alpine Triptych.

WHERE TO STAY

In St. Moritz Dorf, Badrutt’s Palace overlooks the lake, while Chesa Languard is near restaurants and the Corviglia funicular. In St. Moritz-Bad, Hotel Corvatsch has a Swiss restaurant and the youth hostel offers family and two-bed rooms beside a winter cross-country trail. If you stay in Silvaplana or Celerina, compare the full price and the journey to your chosen lift, including the return after skiing.

THE FOOD SCENE

On Corviglia, Trutz has a terrace beside the Suvretta-Randolins top station. On Corvatsch, Alpetta specializes in grilled and smoked food. In town, choose Chesa Veglia’s farmhouse dining rooms, the pasta at Veltlinerkeller or Japanese-Peruvian dishes at Matsuhisa.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

For music and a longer mountain lunch, book Paradiso. Back in town, Badrutt’s Palace lists cocktails at its Renaissance Bar. Ask about access and reservations if you are not a hotel guest.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Choose one Engadin sector for the morning. Allow travel time for transfers between Corviglia and Diavolezza.
  • 💡For the eight-kilometre Morteratsch glacier route, check the official opening and the train back before setting out. Consider a mountain guide.
  • 💡Book a hotel dinner in advance and ask about non-resident access during busy periods.
