THE REGION

Stowe Mountain Resort occupies the slopes of Mount Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak at 4,395 feet, in the heart of the Green Mountains of northern Vermont. This is one of the most storied ski destinations in North America, with a skiing history dating back to the 1930s and a resort pedigree that rivals any in the East. The mountain's distinctive profile -- locals see a face in the ridgeline, with features named the Forehead, Nose, and Chin -- is one of the most recognizable silhouettes in Eastern skiing. The charming village of Stowe sits at the base of Mountain Road, a scenic corridor lined with inns, restaurants, and shops that gives the resort its distinctive European village-meets-Vermont character. Under Vail Resorts ownership since 2017, Stowe has received significant infrastructure investment while maintaining its heritage and character.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Stowe has cultivated a distinctive identity that blends Vermont's agrarian authenticity with resort sophistication. The village maintains strict design standards that preserve its New England character -- no chain restaurants or neon signs line Main Street. Instead, you find independent bookshops, farm-to-table restaurants, craft galleries, and specialty stores. The local community includes a vibrant mix of lifelong Vermonters, ski industry professionals, artists, and well-heeled second-home owners. The vibe is upscale but accessible, outdoorsy but cultured, and proudly, unmistakably Vermont. The Trapp Family Lodge, founded by the Von Trapp family of Sound of Music fame, adds a unique Austrian alpine influence to the local culture.

GETTING THERE

Stowe is located in northern Vermont, approximately 3 hours from Boston via I-93 North to I-89 North to Route 100 North. From New York City, the drive is about 5.5 hours via I-91 North to I-89 North. Burlington International Airport (BTV) is the nearest commercial airport, about 45 minutes west, with service from several major carriers. Montreal's Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL) is about 2.5 hours north. Many visitors fly into BTV and rent a car for the scenic drive through Waterbury and up Route 100.

WHEN TO GO

Stowe's season typically runs from mid-November through late April. January and February deliver the coldest temperatures, best natural snow, and most reliable conditions. February school vacation week and the Christmas-New Year's holiday period are the busiest and most expensive. March brings spring skiing with warmer days and softer snow. Early season (November-December) can be excellent as Stowe's snowmaking and north-facing aspect often produce great early coverage. Midweek visits throughout the season provide dramatically shorter lines and better access to everything.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🧘

Spa and Wellness at Topnotch Resort

Wellness

Indulge in a world-class spa experience at the Topnotch Resort, one of the top-rated spas in New England.

WHERE TO STAY

Choose The Lodge at Spruce Peak to stay beside the ski area. For a village stay, Green Mountain Inn has rooms as well as apartments and townhouses. Stowe Motel & Snowdrift sits between the village and the mountain and offers efficiencies. Topnotch has spa facilities and larger homes, and Trapp Family Lodge is an Austrian-inspired retreat with dining and activities on its grounds. Plan a drive or check local transit from properties away from Spruce Peak.

THE FOOD SCENE

The Bench serves Vermont comfort food on Mountain Road and takes walk-ins. Harrison’s on Main Street suits a more leisurely village dinner. If your plans take you through Waterbury, reserve Hen of the Wood for the evening.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

The Matterhorn is a riverside Mountain Road stop with pizza, sushi and burgers. Farther along Mountain Road, Doc Ponds combines a restaurant with a record bar and an online waitlist.
