SOUTHERN VERMONT

THE REGION

Southern Vermont occupies a sweet spot in the Northeast ski landscape: far enough north for real winter, close enough to New York and Boston for weekend trips. The region is defined by the Green Mountains' southern reaches, where peaks rise to nearly 4,000 feet and valleys hold charming towns that have been welcoming visitors since the resort era began.

Stratton sits in one of the more exclusive pockets of this region, surrounded by second homes and private communities that give the area a polished, upscale feel. The nearby town of Manchester—about 30 minutes away—has evolved from a marble-quarrying village into a sophisticated destination with designer outlets, fine dining, and the historic Equinox resort. It's Vermont, but a more manicured version.

The region carries significant skiing history. Jake Burton Carpenter developed and tested his first snowboards here in the late 1970s, and Stratton hosted the first US Open of Snowboarding. That legacy lives on in the resort's strong park program and its status as a pilgrimage site for snowboard historians. The mountain itself is a single peak with a well-planned village at its base, offering the kind of self-contained resort experience that makes ski trips straightforward.

Beyond Stratton, southern Vermont offers covered bridges, maple syrup operations, and the kind of small-town New England charm that draws visitors year-round. Bennington to the west has Revolutionary War history and a strong arts community. The region's location means you're never far from civilization—Albany is 90 minutes away, Boston about three hours—making it genuinely accessible for long weekend trips without feeling like you've barely left home.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Southern Vermont has a refined sensibility that distinguishes it from the state's more rustic northern regions. The influence of New York money is evident in the quality of restaurants, the prevalence of high-end retail, and the generally polished atmosphere. Manchester in particular feels almost Hamptons-esque in summer. But there's genuine Vermont underneath: dairy farms still operate, maple season brings steam rising from sugarhouses, and locals maintain a quiet pride in their independence. Stratton's village has the feel of a planned community—pleasant and convenient, if not authentically historic.

GETTING THERE

Albany International Airport (ALB) is the closest major airport, about 90 minutes west via Route 7. From New York City, it's approximately 4 hours via I-87 and Route 30—a drive that improves dramatically once you leave the Northway and enter Vermont's back roads. Boston is about 3 hours east via I-91 and Route 30. Hartford's Bradley International is another option at roughly 2.5 hours. The final approach to Stratton via Route 30 and Stratton Mountain Road is well-maintained but can be challenging in storms. The resort's relative isolation from major routes means less through-traffic but also fewer bailout options—check conditions before heading up.

WHEN TO GO

February typically offers the best combination of snow coverage and pleasant temperatures. January can be bitter cold, which thins crowds but makes for challenging conditions. March brings spring skiing vibes—warmer weather, longer days, and softer snow that's forgiving for intermediate skiers. The holiday weeks (Christmas and Presidents' Day) are predictably crowded; book well ahead or avoid entirely. For the best balance of snow quality and manageable crowds, target midweek visits in late January or early February.

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

WHERE TO STAY

Black Bear Lodge offers hotel rooms a walk or winter shuttle from the village and lifts. Long Trail House and Hearthstone offer condos within walking distance, with shared pools and hot tubs. For more space, compare each unit’s bedrooms, kitchen and access from the car. A stay in Manchester or Bondville means a separate road trip to Stratton.

THE FOOD SCENE

Start a village day with brunch at Benedicts in the Landmark courtyard. Fire Tower serves comfort food and cocktails, while Mulligans puts several dining rooms and bars together near the Clocktower.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Grizzly’s is in the Main Base Lodge for a post-ski drink. In Village Square, compare Bar 802’s music listings with a quieter table at Fire Tower.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Check the seasonal sightseeing product before promising a non-skier a gondola trip. For a winter meal the whole group can reach, start in Stratton Village.
  • 💡Check your property’s winter shuttle stop and return frequency before leaving the car.
  • 💡Allow a half-day for Manchester’s shops and the Hildene estate.
