THE REGION

Sugarbush spans Lincoln Peak and Mount Ellen above the Mad River Valley, with 581 skiable acres. Warren and Waitsfield give the area its village character, with covered bridges, farms and sugarhouses along Route 100. Mad River Glen is a separate ski area in the valley. For dinner, American Flatbread is in Waitsfield and The Pitcher Inn is in Warren.

THE LOCAL SCENE

The Mad River Valley has a counterculture streak that dates back decades. Organic farming, alternative energy, and an anything-goes artistic community give the area an identity distinct from Vermont's more polished resort towns. The annual "Slide & Ride" ski touring event celebrates the valley's backcountry heritage, while summer's Warren Fourth of July Parade is legendarily irreverent. Locals here have strong opinions about skiing (many are Mad River Glen devotees), sustainable agriculture, and keeping the valley unchanged. The vibe is unpretentious, intellectual, and warmly welcoming to visitors who appreciate what makes this place special.

GETTING THERE

Burlington International Airport (BTV) is the gateway, about 50 miles north via I-89 and Route 100. The drive takes roughly an hour in good conditions, but Route 100 through the valley is famously scenic and worth not rushing. From Boston, it's approximately 3.5 hours via I-93 and I-89—a drive that reveals increasingly dramatic mountain scenery as you head north. Albany is about 3 hours southwest. Winter drivers should be prepared for mountain roads; all-wheel drive or snow tires are strongly recommended December through March. The valley's north-south orientation means Route 100 is well-maintained, but side roads to lodging can require careful navigation in storms.

WHEN TO GO

Mid-January through mid-March delivers the most reliable conditions, with February typically offering the best combination of snow depth and daylight hours. The Mad River Valley is far enough north to hold snow well, and Sugarbush's aggressive snowmaking covers the most popular terrain. Early January can bring bitter cold but also the lightest powder. Late March offers excellent spring skiing conditions with warmer temps and longer days. For maple sugaring season (late February through early April), time your visit to coincide with fresh snowfall and open sugarhouses—a uniquely Vermont combination.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

WHERE TO STAY

In the valley, Warren Lodge has riverside guest rooms and separately located condos, while The Pitcher Inn puts you in Warren village with dinner on site. Compare the drive to Lincoln Peak or Mt. Ellen from the actual property address, particularly for an off-site rental.

THE FOOD SCENE

Allyn’s Lodge is the Lincoln Peak stop for a mid-mountain snack. Down in the valley, American Flatbread offers a group meal or pickup on Lareau Road in Waitsfield. The Pitcher Inn serves farm-to-table dinners in Warren.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Meet at Castlerock Pub or the retro Wünderbar at Lincoln Peak. For a quieter sit-down evening, head into Warren for dinner at The Pitcher Inn.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Check the Castlerock Double and natural-snow terrain before planning an expert lap.
  • 💡Take a village lunch break at the Warren Store, or choose American Flatbread for an evening in Waitsfield.
  • 💡Mad River Glen is a separate skier-only mountain. Check its own tickets and Single Chair schedule.
