THE REGION

Sun Valley holds a unique place in American skiing history—this is where it all began. In 1936, Union Pacific Railroad chairman Averell Harriman commissioned a search for the perfect location to build America's first destination ski resort, and Count Felix Schaffgotsch found it in this remote Idaho valley. The world's first chairlift was installed here that same year, and Sun Valley became synonymous with glamorous skiing before most Americans had ever seen a ski slope.

The Wood River Valley stretches for 30 miles from Bellevue in the south through Hailey and Ketchum to Sun Valley at the northern end. Ketchum is the working town—where Ernest Hemingway spent his final years and where locals still outnumber tourists. Sun Valley itself is the resort compound, centered on the legendary Sun Valley Lodge where Hollywood stars from the 1930s to today have gathered.

Bald Mountain ("Baldy" to locals) delivers the skiing—3,400 feet of vertical, 2,154 skiable acres, and what many consider the finest grooming in North America. The mountain's unique geography channels consistent dry snow from the central Idaho ranges while maintaining remarkably stable weather patterns. Long, sustained pitches reward technique over aggression.

The valley floor sits at 5,900 feet, high enough for cold temperatures but low enough to avoid the altitude adjustment many Colorado visitors face. The surrounding Sawtooth and Pioneer mountain ranges create a stunning backdrop of jagged peaks and high wilderness, offering backcountry touring and summer adventures for those who look beyond the resort boundaries.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Sun Valley maintains an interesting duality. The resort itself retains old-world glamour—the Sun Valley Lodge still hosts guests in rooms named for movie stars who stayed in them. But Ketchum is a real town with year-round residents, working ranches in the valley, and a culture that values independence and outdoor living.

Hemingway's presence looms large—he finished "For Whom the Bell Tolls" here and is buried in the town cemetery. The literary and artistic heritage continues today, with a surprisingly sophisticated cultural scene for a town of 3,000 people.

GETTING THERE

Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN) is in Hailey, about 12 miles from Ketchum and Sun Valley. Arrange an airport transfer or rental separately from the ski day. From Boise, the direct southern approach follows I-84 east to US-20, then ID-75 north through the Wood River Valley. Stanley and Galena Summit belong to a longer northern route. Check winter road conditions before departure. In the valley, Mountain Rides buses connect Hailey, Ketchum and Sun Valley on published routes.

WHEN TO GO

January through mid-March delivers the most reliable conditions, with cold temperatures preserving Sun Valley's famously light, dry snow. The resort's southerly latitude means more sunshine than many Rocky Mountain destinations, creating pleasant on-mountain conditions even in the coldest months.

March and April bring spring skiing at its finest—soft snow, warm temperatures, and fewer crowds. Sun Valley's grooming remains impeccable even as natural snow becomes less frequent, making spring an excellent time for intermediate skiers seeking perfect corduroy.
