Sunday River’s eight interconnected peaks rise above Newry and the Bethel area. Use South Ridge for learning terrain and the Chondola to North Peak, Barker as a central junction, or Jordan for a day at the western end. Down in Bethel, village lodging and restaurants give visitors a separate town base.
A ski day can start at the South Ridge base and end with music on the access road or a tavern dinner in Bethel. Choose your evening stop with the route back to your lodging in mind.
Portland International Jetport (PWM) provides the primary gateway, located 90 minutes south via Route 26 through the scenic foothills. Boston's Logan Airport offers more flight options, adding another hour to the drive but often with better airfares. The final approach through Bethel is charming, passing through small Maine villages that feel frozen in time.
Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT) in New Hampshire provides an alternative gateway with sometimes lower fares, though the drive is similar in duration. Winter drivers should be comfortable with mountain roads—Maine maintains them well, but conditions can change quickly during storms.
The middle of winter generally offers the widest terrain choice. Early and late in the season, compare the open peaks and connecting lifts before choosing your starting base. Spring snow softens as the day warms.

The Jordan Hotel sits beside Jordan 8, while the Grand Summit Hotel offers ski-in/ski-out access in White Cap basin. Both have pools and winter resort shuttles. Choose the Snow Cap Inn for a two-queen room within the resort. For a town base, the Bethel Inn Resort has standard rooms and two-bedroom townhouses with kitchens and laundry. Check the drive to your morning base, especially if rentals or lessons meet elsewhere.
Peak Lodge Food Court is a Chondola ride up North Peak from South Ridge. For dinner in Bethel, choose the seasonal kitchen at Mayville Union House or Sunday River Brewing Company. Good Food Store is a useful pickup stop if your group has a kitchen.
Matterhorn Ski Bar is on Sunday River Road in Newry, away from the lifts. Check its music calendar before heading over for wood-fired pizza. Sunday River Brewing Company is a separate Bethel stop for a pub meal and a flight.
