THE REGION

Thyon 2000 looks over the Val d’Hérens, above the terraces of Les Collons and Les Masses. Its connection with the 4 Vallées gives groups a choice between learning locally and travelling farther across the ski area. Other sectors depend on the day’s lift links and your pass.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Thyon is a purpose-built station rather than a traditional village, but the surrounding hamlets of Les Collons, Les Masses, and Les Agettes retain authentic Valais character with old timber mazots and mountain farming traditions. The area has a strong sporting identity — the Piste de l'Ours (Bear's Run) has hosted numerous World Cup events. The local identity is rooted in accessible, honest mountain sports rather than luxury tourism.

GETTING THERE

From Geneva, travel by rail to Sion and connect to the mountain bus serving Les Collons and Thyon 2000. Select the stop for your lodging when checking the timetable. Drivers use the A9 exit at Sion-Est, then follow signs for Val d’Hérens and turn towards Thyon–Les Collons at Vex.

WHEN TO GO

The planned winter season generally runs from December into April. Check open pistes and connecting lifts near the beginning and end of the season. Race events can change public access to the Piste de l’Ours.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

🏔️

Piste de l'Ours

Outdoor

Ski the famous World Cup race track — a challenging red/black run with steep sections and banked turns

🏔️

Panoramic Snowshoeing

Outdoor

High-altitude snowshoe trails above 2,000m with unobstructed views of the Dent Blanche, Mont Blanc, and the Valais Alps

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Hérémence outdoor ice rink

Family

Skate in the village of Hérémence with views of the Valais peaks. Check public sessions and skate hire before going.

🎭

Les Masses Heritage

Culture

Visit the traditional hamlet of Les Masses with its historic timber granaries (mazots) and small baroque chapel

WHERE TO STAY

At Thyon 2000, Imalp rents studios and apartments directly on the ski area. In Les Collons, Auberge de l’Ours is at the pistes and La Cambuse offers rooms and dining. Les Masses is a separate base. Dent Blanche Resort offers apartments with spa facilities, while the privately rented Chalet Étoiles des Neiges is away from the chairlift. Check the street address and route to the lift before booking.

THE FOOD SCENE

Restaurant la Tsermetta sits beside the pistes in Thyon 2000, with a terrace looking out to the mountains. In Les Collons, La Cambuse serves French cooking alongside Valais specialties in a panoramic dining room.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

A terrace break at la Tsermetta suits a group finishing in Thyon 2000. If you are staying lower down, plan a relaxed meal in Les Collons at La Cambuse. Check your return transport before spending the evening in another village.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Use the snow garden and beginner carpet for first lessons.
  • 💡Check the last connecting lifts before setting out towards another 4 Vallées sector.
  • 💡Compare the lift and bus stop serving each accommodation. Les Collons has several levels.
