THE REGION

The Vail Valley stretches along the Eagle River and Gore Creek corridors in the heart of the Colorado Rockies, anchored by the town of Vail at 8,150 feet. Originally developed in the early 1960s by Pete Seibert and Earl Eaton, Vail was modeled after European alpine villages and has grown into one of North America's premier ski destinations. The valley runs roughly east-west along Interstate 70, with the Gore Range to the north and the Sawatch Range to the south.

Vail Mountain itself boasts over 5,300 acres of skiable terrain, making it the third-largest ski resort in the United States. The famed Back Bowls -- seven massive open powder bowls stretching across the mountain's south face -- offer a legendary backcountry-style experience within resort boundaries. Combined with the Blue Sky Basin area, Vail delivers an unmatched diversity of terrain from perfectly groomed front-side cruisers to technical chutes and gladed tree runs.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Vail Village is a pedestrian-only European-style village with cobblestone walkways, upscale boutiques, and world-class restaurants. Despite its luxury reputation, the community has a strong local culture built around outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship. The town embraces a distinctly international feel -- you'll hear multiple languages on the gondola and find authentic cuisine from around the world. Lionshead Village on the west side offers a slightly more relaxed alternative to Vail Village proper.

GETTING THERE

Eagle County Regional Airport is the closer gateway. Denver International Airport is about 120 road miles away on the I-70 approach, with mountain conditions and weekend traffic affecting travel time. Epic Mountain Express serves both airports. In Vail, choose the village or Lionshead garage for your starting lift and use the free in-town bus between them.

WHEN TO GO

Vail's season typically runs from mid-November through mid-April. January and February deliver the most consistent snowfall and coldest temperatures for quality snow preservation. March offers a sweet spot of deep snowpack, longer days, and slightly warmer temps ideal for spring skiing. Avoid Presidents' Day week and Christmas-New Year's if you want to dodge the biggest crowds. Late March and early April can offer incredible value with discounted lodging and surprisingly good snow conditions.

At Mid-Vail, The 10th serves a full-service mountain lunch and requires lift access. In Vail Village, Mountain Standard centres dinner on wood-fired cooking, while Sweet Basil serves seasonal modern American food on Gore Creek Drive.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Garfinkel’s makes an easy Lionshead meeting point with its deck above the gondola. In Vail Village, Mountain Standard has cocktails and craft beer alongside its wood-fired menu.

INSIDER TIPS
