THE REGION

Valle Nevado sits high in the Andes above Santiago, near La Parva and El Colorado. Their proximity gives visitors a choice of ski areas, but each connection has its own opening status and ticket terms. Staying in the mountain hotel area avoids the daily climb from Santiago.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Santiago is one of South America's most cosmopolitan cities—a sprawling metropolis of seven million that combines European sophistication with Latin American energy. The city's restaurant scene rivals any major world capital, from traditional Chilean seafood to innovative fusion cuisine. Wine bars pour some of the world's best Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere from valleys just an hour away.

The ski culture here reflects Chile's unique position: South American warmth combined with European-influenced skiing tradition. Lunches are leisurely affairs, often extending past 2pm with wine and conversation. The pace is relaxed by North American standards, and the vibe is decidedly social.

Valle Nevado itself operates as an isolated village—there's no town at the base, just the resort hotels and apartments. This creates an intimate, almost cruise-ship atmosphere where the same faces appear at breakfast, on the lifts, and at dinner. It's ideal for making friends and terrible for those who prefer anonymity.

The local skiers are passionate and skilled, having grown up on these slopes. Don't be surprised to see locals charging terrain that would give most visitors pause—the altitude and thin air seem to affect them less. Chilean hospitality extends to sharing knowledge about the mountain; ask at the bar where the best snow is hiding, and you'll likely get detailed beta.

South American ski seasons overlap with North American summers, creating a unique community of ski professionals, coaches, and die-hard enthusiasts who migrate south each year. You'll encounter ski racers training for the next winter, instructors brushing up their skills, and powder hounds chasing the endless winter dream.

GETTING THERE

Fly into Santiago and arrange a mountain transfer or drive towards Farellones on G-21, then take the Valle Nevado access road. The winding route can take substantially longer in winter traffic. Check the mountain report for G-21/G-251 road conditions, direction-of-travel windows and any chain requirement before setting off in either direction.

WHEN TO GO

July and August are midwinter. September brings longer days and increasingly spring-like snow, though the exact season end depends on coverage and lift operation. Check the calendar for your hotel as well as the ski area if visiting at either end of the season.

WHERE TO STAY

The resort’s three hotels are closed until the 2027 ski season. Check with reservations for the next available dates. Hotel Valle Nevado has direct slope access from the lobby. Puerta del Sol offers family and connecting rooms a short walk from the slopes, while Tres Puntas has rooms for groups of friends. Compare meals and lift days for the package you select.

Choose an apartment for more living space and the option to cook. The resort distinguishes its serviced Aconcagua Ski Residences from private apartment rentals. Santiago also works as a city base for day trips if you plan the mountain journey in each direction. For stays at neighbouring resorts, check both transport and ticket coverage before planning a day at Valle Nevado.

THE FOOD SCENE

Stop at Bajo Zero for a quick meal on the mountain. In the hotels area, Mirador del Plomo offers a buffet in Puerta del Sol, Monte Bianco serves Italian dishes beside Valle Lounge, and La Fourchette pairs French cooking with Andes views. Check the dining outlets available for your stay dates.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

La Leñera in the hotels area offers beer and a casual meal after skiing. If you are day-tripping from Santiago, check your downhill transfer before staying for a drink.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Check the road report for permitted up- and downhill times.
  • 💡Consult both mountains before crossing to La Parva and leave time for the return lifts.
  • 💡Take a break on the Bajo Zero terraces when skiing the middle of the mountain.
