THE REGION

Whistler Blackcomb is North America's largest ski resort, featuring over 8,100 acres of skiable terrain across two massive mountains connected by the record-breaking PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola. With a combined vertical drop of 1,609 meters (5,280 feet), over 200 marked runs, and an average annual snowfall of 1,164 cm (458 inches), Whistler Blackcomb is a world-class destination by every measure.

Host of the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, Whistler has evolved from a logging town into one of the world's premier mountain resort communities. The pedestrian-only Whistler Village buzzes year-round with restaurants, shops, bars, and galleries, while the mountains deliver everything from gentle beginner slopes to gnarly expert chutes and vast alpine bowls.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Whistler Village is a purpose-built pedestrian resort community that somehow manages to feel vibrant and authentic despite its planned origins. The town has a cosmopolitan, international flavor with staff and visitors from around the world, yet maintains a strong local culture of outdoor enthusiasts.

The resort sits on the shared traditional territory of the Squamish and Lil'wat Nations, who operate the stunning Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre. This world-class museum showcases the rich heritage of the region's First Nations peoples.

GETTING THERE

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is the main air gateway. Whistler is reached along the Sea-to-Sky Highway (Highway 99); allow a generous travel buffer for weather and traffic.

Scheduled coaches and private transfers connect Vancouver and Whistler. Compare the drop-off location with your accommodation, especially if staying beyond the village. A village base can simplify a stay without a car; check the operator’s current luggage and transfer arrangements.

WHEN TO GO

The season runs from late November through late May, with glacier skiing sometimes extending into June. January and February deliver the deepest snowpack and most powder days. March is excellent with longer days and often abundant snow. Late season (April-May) brings spring skiing with warm temperatures and corn snow.

For the best value, visit in January before MLK weekend or in March. Holiday periods (Christmas, Presidents' Day) are extremely crowded and expensive.

WHERE TO STAY

Choose your Whistler base by the lift access and village atmosphere you prefer. Fairmont Chateau Whistler sits at the Blackcomb base; Blackcomb Springs Suites offers slopeside suites with kitchens. Four Seasons Resort Whistler provides another Blackcomb-area hotel setting, with its specific access details in the lodging card.

Legends offers a Creekside condo-style base, while HI Whistler is a hostel option away from the main village. Compare the actual room, transport and total stay price rather than assuming a hotel brand or neighborhood guarantees ski-in/ski-out access.

THE FOOD SCENE

Whistler's dining scene is world-class, with over 200 restaurants. Fine dining at Araxi Restaurant, Wild Blue, and Bearfoot Bistro rivals any major city. For casual fare, Sushi Village and Handlebar Cafe are local institutions. On-mountain, Christine's on Blackcomb and the Roundhouse Lodge offer quality meals with incredible views.

Don't miss the Whistler Farmers Market (seasonal) and the thriving food truck scene in summer and winter.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

The GLC (Garibaldi Lift Company) at the base of Whistler is the quintessential après bar with a massive sun deck. Merlin's Bar at Blackcomb base and the Longhorn Saloon in the Village are also legendary. For a more refined experience, the Bearfoot Bistro's champagne lounge and vodka ice room offer a unique twist on après-ski.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Download the fresh tracks ticket for early morning access to groomed runs before the crowds arrive
  • 💡Ski Blackcomb on weekends and Whistler on weekdays — most visitors default to Whistler first
  • 💡The 7th Heaven zone on Blackcomb holds the best advanced terrain and often has shorter lines
  • 💡Book the Scandinave Spa for an evening session — the outdoor baths under the stars are unforgettable
