THE REGION

Whitetail Resort occupies the slopes of Two Top Mountain in the Tuscarora range of south-central Pennsylvania, near the Maryland border. Like its sister resorts Liberty Mountain and Roundtop, Whitetail serves primarily as a day-trip and weekend destination for skiers from the Washington D.C., Baltimore, and Harrisburg metro areas. Among the three, Whitetail is widely considered to offer the best skiing, with slightly more vertical, better fall line, and more challenging terrain. The surrounding area is rural and agricultural, with the small town of Mercersburg providing the nearest services and the historic town of Chambersburg serving as the regional hub.

THE LOCAL SCENE

Mercersburg is a small, quiet town with a charming Main Street, home to the Mercersburg Academy (a prestigious prep school) and a handful of restaurants and shops. The broader region has a strong agricultural character, with farms and orchards dotting the valley floors between the long, parallel ridges of the Appalachian Mountains. The ski crowd at Whitetail skews toward D.C.-area professionals and families, creating a polished but relaxed weekend atmosphere.

GETTING THERE

Whitetail is approximately two hours from Washington, D.C. via I-270 North to I-70 West to Route 40 West. From Baltimore, the drive is about 90 minutes via I-70 West. From Harrisburg, it is about 75 minutes southwest via I-81 South to Route 30 West. The nearest commercial airport is Hagerstown Regional Airport (HGR) in Maryland, about 30 minutes south, with very limited service. Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) are both roughly two hours away.

WHEN TO GO

The season runs from mid-December through mid-March, with extensive snowmaking compensating for the relatively low elevation. January and February provide the most reliable conditions. Weekends draw heavy crowds from the D.C. metro area, so midweek visits are strongly recommended. Night skiing is available on select evenings, extending the experience for day-trippers.

WHERE TO STAY

The Mercersburg Inn offers rooms in its main house and carriage house, with Byron’s Dining Room on site. Greencastle and Chambersburg provide highway hotel options for drivers. Hagerstown works if you want to overnight on the Maryland side, with Hampton Inn and Super 8 options on Dual Highway. Plan the drive to the ski area separately from each stay. A day trip from the D.C. area is another option if you prefer to return home after skiing.

THE FOOD SCENE

At the resort, The Marketplace serves hot meals and grab-and-go food. Mountain Hearth Pizzeria is another option for lunch. For a sit-down dinner away from the slopes, reserve a table at Byron’s Dining Room in Mercersburg.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Daybreak Tavern is the easy meeting place for a drink and a bite at the mountain. Continue to Mercersburg if dinner at the inn is part of the evening.
