SOUTHEAST WISCONSIN / CHICAGO GATEWAY

THE REGION

Wilmot Mountain sits just north of the Wisconsin-Illinois border in the gentle hills of Kenosha County, making it the closest ski area to the Chicago metropolitan area. The region is lake country, with dozens of glacial lakes surrounded by resort communities. Nearby Lake Geneva is a historic vacation destination for Chicagoans, offering upscale lodging, dining, and lakefront scenery that elevates a Wilmot ski trip from a simple day outing to a potential weekend getaway.

THE LOCAL SCENE

The Wisconsin–Illinois border here is lake country. Wilmot suits a short ski day, while Lake Geneva gives weekend visitors a waterfront, downtown shops and dinner along Main Street.

GETTING THERE

Use 11931 Fox River Road for skiing and snowboarding. The tubing lodge has a separate entrance just south at 12301 Fox River Road. The resort estimates roughly an hour from Chicago and 45 minutes from Milwaukee in good conditions. If using a ride service, arrange the return before leaving the city.

WHEN TO GO

The season runs from mid-December through early March. January and February are the most reliable months for consistent conditions with full snowmaking coverage. Night skiing is offered and extends the value of the drive from Chicago. Midweek visits avoid the heavy weekend crowds from the metro area.

BEYOND THE SLOPES

The region offers much more than skiing. Here's what else to explore:

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Wilmot Tube Park

Family

Book a tubing session for a different way to spend time on the snow. The park has its own lodge and parking entrance south of the ski area.

WHERE TO STAY

Grand Geneva just outside Lake Geneva suits a resort weekend with a spa, dining and a ski hill of its own. The Abbey in Fontana offers a lakeside stay with indoor and outdoor pools. For a simpler hotel, Hampton Inn Elkhorn has an indoor pool and breakfast, and Days Inn Pleasant Prairie is on the I-94 corridor. All are separate bases from Wilmot. Choose the location that fits the driving you want to do between skiing and your evening plans.

THE FOOD SCENE

Walt’s Tavern sits above rentals, while Ski Hill Grill in the Main Lodge is the quick-service choice for a mixed group. For dinner away from the ski hill, Sopra Bistro serves Italian-American food on Main Street in Lake Geneva.

APRÈS & NIGHTLIFE

Choose Lake Geneva for a longer evening. Main Street puts dinner at Sopra Bistro within a walk of downtown shops and the lakefront.

INSIDER TIPS

  • 💡Make it a Lake Geneva weekend: ski at Wilmot during the day and enjoy the town's restaurants and nightlife in the evening.
  • 💡Arrive before 9 AM on weekends to beat the Chicago crowd and claim a good parking spot.
  • 💡The learning area is one of the best in the Midwest for first-timers — take advantage of lesson packages early in the season.
